Despicable Me 3

Despicable Me 3 (2017)

Genre: Animation, Action, Adventure, Family Film

Another film from the Despicable Me franchise but this one is following Gru (Steve Carell) and his family unlike the Minions movie. Personally, I am glad we are following this family again as these character are what made this series along with the minions (not just Minions 😛 ) . However, this movie is not spectacular as it could have been. Don’t get me wrong this film is alright, almost great and is definitely a brilliant family film 🙂 . Let’s start with the positives. I loved the villain Balthazar Bratt (Trey Parker) who played his part in this narrative great, his reason for villain worked and his 80’s look was fabulous 😀 . I loved his general 80’s vibe and how his weapons were 80’s items like a Rubik cube 🙂 . The minions were funny in the prison especially with the freedom song 😛 . I also liked the addition of Dru (Steve Carell) who slotted into the “family” well and he became more likable as the story continued 🙂 . He was charming and a fresh update that the family needed for this film 🙂 . There were also sweet charming moments in this movie.  Also the final battle was alright and entertaining plus I loved the ending scene with the “5 minute head start” (I won’t hint no more as I don’t want to spoil 😛 ). However, the storyline was not the most original and was only fairly entertaining. The minions weren’t as funny as they could have been and were not in it as much I was expecting them too. I’m not sure if that was a good thing and the general storylines felt like I was watching a television series episode with its individual sub plots. Though this film is still good enough for fans of Despicable Me, children, families and I did quite enjoy it 🙂 . The film is not as great as the original but I think this is better than Minions 🙂 Enjoy 😀

I give this film 3.5 Stars out of 5!

Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)

Genre: Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi, Marvel

I have always been a huge fan of Spider-Man since I was a child and have been very excited to see this newest addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe 🙂 . Tom Holland introduced a great Spider-Man in “Captain America: Civil War” and continued in this film by creating a very likable character. He made a brilliant version that was charming and sweet 🙂 . I loved the story development with its great action scenes, fantastic twists and connections to other Marvel movies 😀 . The addition of the “Avengers” and mostly Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) was fabulous. He was funny but a great mentor/father figure that helped the story and I looked forward to seeing him and Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau) 😀 . Because it meant more danger / adventure was about to happen (trying not to spoil 😛 ). The villain Jon Favreau (Michael Keaton) was a brilliant and dangerous bad guy for Spider-Man. He looked impressive, was strong in the battles and his ending was fitting plus different! His twist part way through was amazing and his reason to become a villain was completely understandable (I felt sorry for him 😛 ). The humour was really strong in this as well 😀 . One of my favourite edge-of- your- seat moments was the “elevator scene” and the other scene was “the boat in half scene”. The flow of the movie went well and his friend Ned (Jacob Batalon) was a welcome (and needed) addition. I loved the ending of the movie as from that last second I cannot wait to see how the next Spider-Man movie will continue 😀 . Also Marvel fans stay for the end credit (as you probably always do) as the very last extra scene is hilarious. A great movie for Marvel Fans that I recommend 🙂 . Enjoy 😀

I give this film 5 Stars out of 5!

Iron Man

Iron Man (2008)

Genre: Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi, Marvel

The movie that started off the amazing Marvel Cinematic Universe as we know it 😀 . This film might be the most interesting origin story and the most (in my opinion) captivating. I was gripped from the beginning scene to the very end 🙂 . I loved how in a sense, we have shoved straight into the action (with the kidnapping) as it made you want to see more. Robert Downey Jr. is perfect for Tony Stark 😀 . With his great acting skills, Downey Jr. uses Tony’s arrogance, charm and witty humour to make his character likable from the start 😀 . The supporting cast were also great in building the humour and action plus Gwyneth Paltrow’s version of Pepper Potts in this was my favourite version.  Obadiah Stane (Jeff Bridges) was also a good character in this movie and I really liked his character development and role in this movie. The music is great and the CGI is fantastic 😀 . I loved the scenes where Tony is building (and testing) the Iron Man suit that we know today and loved his “revenge” against the terrorists as Iron Man later in the movie 🙂 .  As well as the humour, there are some touching moments such as the scene when Tony is escaping near the beginning (I won’t say no more as I don’t want to spoil 😛 ). Also the danger element in this film and the “not sure if he will make it” is very gripping (nail biting though you know he is in later movies 😛 ) . The conclusion worked well and the hints to later films in the franchise such as Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) making his appearance. The movie set a strong bar for the others to follow and this movie is enjoyable to watch multiple times. Plus the actual ending (not the special credit ending 😛 ) with Tony Stark’s line is awesome 🙂 . Worth the watch for any Superhero fan not just the Marvel Fans 😀 Enjoy 😀

I give this film 5 Stars out of 5!

Baywatch (2017)

Genre: Action, Comedy, Drama

The movie based off the very famous television series and is aiming to please its original fans 🙂 . For the fans they do bring back some cameos of the original cast which I am sure they are pleased to see. This film should not be taken seriously as it definitely is not 😛 . I kind of liked that the movie made a joke of themselves with the odd jokes of the “slow motion” which were quite funny. The cast is good and has some famous faces such as Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron 🙂 . They all acted well especially the main two actors Johnson and Efron. Their characters were funny, well rounded and kept the banter between them constant and believable (as much as could be 😛 ). The storyline is very entertaining (as long as you don’t take it too seriously) and does have a few decent “saves” to keep you captivated. The flow of the movie runs smoothly, the “dark” storyline worked well with the high comedy element and finished great. I did laugh and found the “save the people” and “murders” quite entertaining. The fire on the boat scene was the most entertaining and my favourite character was Zac Efron’s Matt Brody. The jokes are crude and aren’t for the fainthearted but the older generations and original fans will enjoy this very much. Also, the music is pretty good 😀 . However, some characters were unnecessary (but you know why they are here 😛 ) and the story is hardly the best I have ever seen. But for a crude but comedy filled movie with the odd action moments (with a pretty decent defeat of the bad guy 😛 ) it will keep most entertained. Enjoy 😀

I give this film 4 Stars out of 5!

Jack Reacher: Never Go Back

Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (2016)

Genre: Action, Adventure, Crime

This is the sequel to the first Jack Reacher film and the best thing I can say about this movie is that it is okay. It is obviously not exactly like the books (just like the first film) but it does keep you fairly engaged and does what an action movie should 🙂 . There are enough fights and explosions to keep the action fans happy. Tom Cruise is great as Jack Reacher again and I think I prefer his portrayal in this rather than in the first movie 😀 . The storyline which forces him to be “involved” in the case works and his relationship with Turner (Cobie Smulders) was good. I really liked that the director did not force a standard, typical or expected relationship between these two and allowed Cobie Smulders to portray a strong woman in this movie 😀 . I also enjoyed the possibility of Jack Reacher being a father and Danika Yarosh who plays Samantha was really good (came across as not annoying 😛 ). My favourite scenes in this movie were the run in the airport and when the truth of whether Reacher is a father is revealed (near the end in the café) 🙂 . However, I can’t say I was entertained throughout and everything was just okay. Not very memorable and it became rather predicable (set up, bad guys chase, fight scenes, protect the girl and so on 😛 ). The storyline of trying to solve the undercover crime was a little messy and dull so I was not really bothered. I can’t say if this was better than the original or not but I think it was a passable and enjoyable enough action movie to sit through even if not the most entertaining 😛 . Good enough for the Jack Reacher fans if you are desperate to watch the sequel 🙂 . Enjoy 😀

I give this film 3 Stars out of 5!

Wonder Woman

Wonder Woman (2017)

Genre: Action, Adventure, Fantasy

I have been looking forward to seeing this movie since we first saw Gal Gadot’s perform in Batman V. Superman. She did not disappoint and this has been my favourite DC movie so far 😀 . Finally, we have a new DC film that does not make me pull apart it narrative after I have watched it and I would look forward to watching again. The story had me captivated from beginning to the end and I really enjoyed seeing Wonder Woman fighting in World War 1. I know this may not be historically accurate and many people would have preferred her in World War 2 but I still very much enjoyed it and it worked for the narrative. Diana’s look was amazing and Gal Gadot’s portrayal of her was stunning, fierce and impressive plus I can’t wait to watch more of her 😀 . I liked the character of Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) as he was believable and endearing. I also liked the secretary Etta (Lucy Davis) as she was a charming addition the story 🙂 . The film was funny, entertaining and did bring a tear to my eye (can’t say why as that would spoil 😛 ). They told us stuff about her past, “who she really is” and I though the mixing of her world (the Amazons) worked well with the World War story. My favourite scene has to be when Wonder Woman fights across No Man’s Land 🙂 . Dr. Maru (Elena Anaya) looked terrifying though I feel we could have seen her defeated better. However, I loved the twist on who Ares truly was in this movie 😀 . I loved the relationship between Steve and Diana but I know it can’t last which is a shame. The look of the movie was great, I was captivated and was a worthy movie of Wonder Woman 😀 . I also found this movie to be less depressive then normal DC movies which I liked. I seriously recommend this movie 😀 . Enjoy 🙂

The Mummy

The Mummy (2017)

Genre: Action, Adventure, Fantasy

There are many bad reviews from critics about this summer’s blockbuster but I really liked it 🙂 . I found this story easy to follow (in a good way), I loved the Egyptian back story and I was entertained throughout. I really liked the Mummy Princess Ahmanet (Sofia Boutella) and her story plus the actress performed her great 😀 . She was scary, looked amazing and when she “returns” her graphics as a Mummy were cool. I liked the CGI on the mummies and liked how she “turned” others, plus her first attack on the mortals in England was pretty cool 🙂 . I liked the main character of Nick Morton (Tom Cruise) and he was a likable character to follow. Plus I really liked his flashbacks / imagination with the Princess which helped keep the story flowing 🙂 . There are some big moments which are cool such as the plane crash, underwater mummies, and when the glass turns to sand in London.  I also liked the “secret company” that becomes involved as it hints to a possible other movie (even a series of movies) and gave a new element to the typical Egyptian mummy story. However, there are some rough edges to the tale and I do sense that they did try and shove too many tales without flowing properly. The action scenes aren’t the best so fans of action may feel disappointed. The weakest part for me was Jenny (Annabelle Wallis). She was great at first (I found her moment seeing the mummies with Nick in the church funny 😛 ) but as she went on, she became irritable and not interesting. I did not care what happened to her and liked the Mummy better 😛 . Though she is minor and you can still enjoy the movie 🙂 . This is a really good movie that I would happily watch again but I am a little biased as I loved watching adventure movies involving Egyptian tales 😛 . This is worth the watch and I can’t wait to see what comes next in the Dark Universe franchise 😀 Enjoy 🙂

The Shallows

The Shallows (2016)

Genre: Thriller, Horror, Drama

This is an alright shark attack movie that can keep you fairly entertained from beginning to the end 🙂 . Blake Lively was quite good as Nancy as her acting in this movie (through her characters struggles) was believable and you felt for her 🙂 . I liked that she was a medical student and how she was “saving herself” when she was dealing with her injuries. The scenery was very pretty and I liked her relationship with the seagull (though I did feel kind of cheesy… 😛 ). The flow of the movie worked and did keep you watching plus you become very intrigued to see how she could survive. The attack of the Shark was very good and I liked how when one stranger was killed we weren’t allowed to see it. We just watched her reaction which was pretty good 🙂 . I also loved the opening scene with the child and I even liked how the shark was defeated (even if it may have been a little unbelievable 😛 ). The CGI is an issue throughout this movie. At times it looked unique with the phone images integrating with the movie then at times looks poor. Especially the graphics of the shark is very questionable at times. Another problem with this movie is the shark’s motives. I assume it is just some seriously blood thirsty monster that just enjoys eating humans even if there is a massive whale carcass. Though the films suggests it is a normal shark so then that makes you question its motives throughout the entire movie creating a sense of unbelievably. However, the film is alright and keeps you entertained. This is good for anyone who likes survival thriller against a monster attack movie but it is nothing “Wow”. Enjoy 🙂

Romeo + Juliet

Romeo + Juliet (1996)

Genre: Drama, Romance

A modern retelling (set in the 90’s when it was filmed) of the classic Shakespeare play of Romeo and Juliet that is done pretty great 🙂 . It brings the classic tale as modern as possible and still keeps you entertained throughout. I found this film very captivating and enthralling from the explosive beginning to the tragic end even if you never knew this story before (though how could you not know 😛 ). Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes are perfect as Romeo and Juliet plus their relationship is very sweet, endearing and believable. Their first meeting scene with the fish tank was memorable and their meeting outside her bedroom (after the party scene) was very good 🙂 . The action scenes and fights between the two households were impressive plus I liked it when the “dark skies” appeared when things got bad. The character of Mercutio (Harold Perrineau)  was great and I liked the look of Tybalt (John Leguizamo) 🙂 . The deaths of certain characters were played well and the end scene was tragic but performed great (the imagery will stick with you after the film ends 😛 ). I did appreciate that the words remained mostly faithful to the original but did not seems out of place. It flowed well with the acting and scenes while making you still believe it was normal way of speaking for a 90’s Verona 🙂 . The soundtrack is also amazing in this and I did like the use of reporters and news television broadcasts at the beginning and the end 🙂 . Also the use of flashbacks may be a tad cheesy but I think it works and I liked how they used guns for the daggers / swords. Overall, this is an adaption that is done fantastically well and is a great watch for any Shakespeare fan or those who love romantic tragedies 🙂 . Enjoy 😀

I give this film 4.5 Stars out of 5!
