A Christmas Prince

A Christmas Prince (2017)

Genre: Comedy, Romance

This new Christmas movie from Netflix had been recommended to me and almost everyone I knew had been watching this. So naturally I had to watch this movie this Christmas 😛 . First off, this film is alright and pleasant to watch from beginning 🙂 . The story was easy to follow and half way did have a surprising twist (about the Prince) that I did not see coming. The film is very predictable apart from that one twist (that I just hinted at 😛 ) and is cliché. Picture a typical romance movie involving a struggling working class girl and a handsome prince and you will probably know most of this tale already. Also when you work with cliché then expect cheesiness in some of the scenes and dialogue. The romance and characters of Amber (Rose McIver) and Prince Richard (Ben Lamb) was good and believable enough for the story 🙂 . The best character and best acting came from Honor Kneafsey as the Princess Emily 😀 . It was a pleasant enough story that is perfect for a family movie though it is not the best out there. It does what it says on the tin…it’s a Christmas romance film. The story can keep you entertained and good romance for those romance fans 😀 . Plus the outfits and set were pretty good too. It’s worth a watch for anyone looking for a light hearted Christmas themed romance 🙂 . I quite liked it but I know this is not going to be everyone’s cup of tea 😛 . Enjoy 😀

I give this film 2.5 Stars out of 5!

How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days

How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003)

Genre: Comedy, Romance

This is a decent light hearted romantic comedy that is great to watch over and over again 🙂 . This has a sweet and easy to follow narrative that can keep you very entertained even if the ending may be predictable 😛 . I loved the introduction to both main characters and the set up for the two characters to meet (their reasons and idea of the whole film) was very good. Kate Hudson as Andie Anderson and Matthew McConaughey as Ben Barry were both very likable characters 🙂 . I even loved their relationship throughout this and they were quite believable when they were no longer playing (the bet wasn’t the reason the characters met).  There are plenty of humorous moments in this which will have you laughing which mostly came from Kate Hudson’s ridiculous “clingy over the top” girlfriend scenes 😀 . Personally, I loved the set and flow of the first half of the movie more. I thought it was captivating, allowed me to see the world the characters were in, their intentions, their friends and plenty of romance and comedy to boot 🙂 . However, when the climax happens (when the bet is revealed) the ending can’t match the first half. Don’t get me wrong, the scene is funny and it ties up the story well. I guess I wanted a more wow ending or perhaps it ended too quickly by the time we got to the climax. Overall, this is a great movie that is fabulous for anyone who loves a decent romantic comedy or girly chick flick 😀 . Enjoy 🙂

I give this film 4.5 Stars out of 5!

Far From the Madding Crowd

Far From the Madding Crowd (2015)

Genre: Drama, Romance

I was wary about watching this movie as I had seen another book adaptation of Thomas Hardy (Tess of the D’Urbervilles BBC series) and I was not the biggest fan. Not that the series was bad because it wasn’t, it was just very depressive and I assumed this one would be the same. However, I was definitely wrong and absolutely loved this 😀 ! The story had me hooked from the very beginning and it continued to captivate me throughout. There are no big dramatic action scenes but the small scale drama still manages to grip you to the story of Bathsheba Everdene. Carey Mulligan performs Bathsheba brilliantly and I loved the empowerment and kind of feminist feel 🙂 . I believed her and really wanted her to “astonish them all” 😛 . The romances she finds and her admirers were also good 🙂 . I liked that each were very different a sheep famer Gabriel Oak (Matthias Schoenaerts), land owner William Boldwood (Michael Sheen) and soldier Sergeant Francis (Tom Sturridge) plus each had a moment with her that made you want her to go with them. I could not decide who I wanted her to be with 😛 . I liked the scenes that shocked me such as the scene with the sheep on the cliff and the conclusion of Christmas Eve party 😛 . The scenery was amazing, the acting superb and costumes really helped envision the Victorian world the characters lived in. 🙂  I liked the character development and the fallout over the Fanny Robbin situation. The ending is also very fitting and perfect 😀 . I was left wanting to see more of this film 😀 ! Overall, this is a great romance period drama which is a must watch for anyone who loves those genres and is a fan of Thomas Hardy 🙂 . Enjoy 😀

Bridesmaid

Bridesmaids (2011)

Genre: Comedy, Romance

I had heard many people who loved this movie and recommend this comedy. Therefore, when I got the chance I had to give this movie a watch 😛 . The overall story is pleasant and I can’t say I wasn’t captivated from beginning to end. The actresses who played the main characters all performed great and I liked the fact this movie is lead by women 🙂 . However, the humour was not as great as I was expecting. The humour felt off or overdone and it tried to force us to laugh along at the comedy elements. Don’t get me wrong I did laugh at parts and it was not terrible 😛 . I think its main problem was the main character herself. Annie (although portrayed brilliantly by Kristen Wiig) was not a very likeable character. I get her life was awful and at times I did feel for her but the problems she faced became annoying. She became dislikeable as the story continued especially her attitude to people and that moment in the bridal shower was horrid. The only characters I did like in this movie were Megan (Melissa McCarthy), Helen (Rose Byrne) and Rhodes (Chris O’Dowd) 🙂 . I did like the growing relationship between Annie and Rhodes (except for her attitude part way through). However, it is saved by the ending and I can’t say it wasn’t entertaining. This is an alright movie that is possibly worth the watch but it is not as great as others may say 😛 . If you like crude humour with your romantic comedy then this is for you 🙂 . Enjoy 😀

Man Up

Man Up (2015)

Genre: Comedy, Drama, Romance

I am not the biggest fan of comedies but sometimes I do find a rare comedy that keeps me entertained throughout 🙂 . Man Up was pleasant, lovely, funny, captivating and a great watch from start to end. We are introduced to Nancy (Lake Bell) and even with her “problems” we automatically sympathise and really root for her to succeed when the film continues 🙂 . The main plot of this film “pretending to be someone else’s date” is actually quite unique and even though it’s “wrong” you really want it succeed 😀 . Jack (Simon Pegg) is a really great character and I really appreciated that this film gave him flaws too not just Nancy 😛 . The chemistry between the two characters is really genuine and I really liked them in the bar when the ex-wife turns up (won’t say any more as I don’t want to spoil 😛 ). There is plenty of space for comedy to work its way into the story and isn’t over powered by the romance. The “The Reflex dance off” was really funny and I loved the scene when Jack is running with the drunk teenagers 😀 . Nancy ‘s old school acquaintance Sean (Rory Kinnear) is the most marmite comedy element here but he is needed for the conclusion.  The pacing of the movie flows well and I was enjoying it that much that I wished I had more to watch. Though I loved the ending and I think it ended perfectly for any fan of romance comedies 🙂 . I certainly recommend this movie for anyone who likes romantic comedies or anyone in general as you will be surprised at how good this is 🙂 . Enjoy 😀

Love & Friendship

Love & Friendship (2016)

Genre: Comedy, Drama, Romance

This is one of the newest versions of Jane Austen’s books which I had not seen before. Love & Friendship is based on the novella Lady Susan and being a fan of previous novels turned to movies, I couldn’t wait to watch this 🙂 . The costumes (especially Lady Susan’s dresses) were amazing, the scenery and houses were great and the background music was suitable. The beginning the story was quite appealing and captivating enough to keep you intrigued. I loved the “introductions” to the characters by giving each person a title and witty description 😀 . That made it unique and at times quite funny to read 😛 .  Kate Beckinsale plays Lady Susan Vernon wonderfully as I believed the character throughout. She was definitely the most entertaining and memorable of them all 🙂 . The comedy was mostly mild throughout but Sir James Martin (Tom Bennett) was absolutely hilarious 😀 . He was my favourite in this film and I especially loved his scene with the “peas” 😛 . Also the dialogue is very faithful to the period and book and at times this wasn’t always a good thing.  It got a little confusing to follow what actually was happening, who was tricking who and had Lady Susan succeeded? The ending was also very much of a let-down.  It felt rushed and shoved together to make a happy ending without actually achieving in movie time. I was unsure how I felt with who married who and that Lady Susan kind of got away with it. Also Frederica Vernon wasn’t the most interesting character to care about. I guess this is great for fans of Jane Austen only but I think reading the book would be better 😛 . However, it is acted great and the odd humour is worth it for Jane Austen fans 🙂 . Enjoy 😀

I give this film 3 Stars out of 5!

Just Like Heaven

Just Like Heaven (2005)

Genre: Comedy, Fantasy, Romance

This is a very sweet romantic movie that is perfect for those lazy days watching with friends 🙂 . This is a pleasant story to follow that is surprisingly very captivating from beginning to the end. There are a few emotional moments in this story that may not be as strong as others in this genre but it is enough. There are plenty of surprises and twists for this easy to follow storyline that help keep it entertaining 🙂 . For example, I loved it when we learnt more about what may have happened to Elizabeth and how she is connected to David. The romance between Elizabeth (Reese Witherspoon) and David (Mark Ruffalo) is sweet, charming and believable 🙂 . I loved their first meeting and how their animosity at the beginning was very comical. I especially loved the scene where Elizabeth is annoying David singing “Tomorrow” 🙂 . The addition of the psychic Darryl (Jon Heder) is fine and worked well with the story and Abby (Dina Spybey-Waters) was quite funny 🙂 . I enjoyed the beginning scene which gives us a hint of what Elizabeth’s life was like and does introduce the tone of the movie well.  I also loved the small addition of the magic /other worldly stuff such as the niece being more aware than normal (when you watch it you will know 😛 ) . The ending is great and kind of has a fairytale feel to the overall movie. This story is a tad predicable near the end but I liked it originality at the beginning and reason for these characters to meet 🙂 . Overall, this is a sweet, entertaining and fantastic movie that is great for anyone who loves romantic comedies with a touch of something different 😀 .  I would recommend this movie and would happily watch again 🙂 . Enjoy 😀

Romeo + Juliet

Romeo + Juliet (1996)

Genre: Drama, Romance

A modern retelling (set in the 90’s when it was filmed) of the classic Shakespeare play of Romeo and Juliet that is done pretty great 🙂 . It brings the classic tale as modern as possible and still keeps you entertained throughout. I found this film very captivating and enthralling from the explosive beginning to the tragic end even if you never knew this story before (though how could you not know 😛 ). Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes are perfect as Romeo and Juliet plus their relationship is very sweet, endearing and believable. Their first meeting scene with the fish tank was memorable and their meeting outside her bedroom (after the party scene) was very good 🙂 . The action scenes and fights between the two households were impressive plus I liked it when the “dark skies” appeared when things got bad. The character of Mercutio (Harold Perrineau)  was great and I liked the look of Tybalt (John Leguizamo) 🙂 . The deaths of certain characters were played well and the end scene was tragic but performed great (the imagery will stick with you after the film ends 😛 ). I did appreciate that the words remained mostly faithful to the original but did not seems out of place. It flowed well with the acting and scenes while making you still believe it was normal way of speaking for a 90’s Verona 🙂 . The soundtrack is also amazing in this and I did like the use of reporters and news television broadcasts at the beginning and the end 🙂 . Also the use of flashbacks may be a tad cheesy but I think it works and I liked how they used guns for the daggers / swords. Overall, this is an adaption that is done fantastically well and is a great watch for any Shakespeare fan or those who love romantic tragedies 🙂 . Enjoy 😀

After The Ball

After the Ball (2015)

Genre: Comedy, Romance

This is another take on that Cinderella story so predictability was always going to be high with this movie. However, as predictable as it was this was a fairly entertaining film 🙂 . Its pace was light but easy to follow and has odd humour moments 🙂 . The beginning starts well and the new modern take of her stepmother and sisters being part of a family business works. They are obviously mean to her but it works in way that is acceptable for a modern world (that no-one else noticing the work harassment and so on 😛 ). The romance is also typical but sweet between Kate (Portia Doubleday) and Daniel (Marc-Andre Groudin) who you do want together (but the pull isn’t that strong as I don’t think I would have minded if they didn’t get together 😛 ). I think what saved this movie for me was about part way through switching from being another Cinderella retelling to a Twelfth Night. The main girl, Portia Doubleday, plays great  “Nate” and the humour excels in this part of the narrative 🙂 . I really wanted her to succeed and I think from this point on was when I felt a connection with the characters. However, on the downside the climax was not that big so the resolution became lukewarm because of it. Though it did end happily and the moment when Daniel realises who Nate is was a great and sweet scene. Plus the costumes are good and I was quite entertained and captivated even with its flaws 😀 . Overall, this is a light hearted, romantic comedy that is worth the watch for those love the romantic comedy genre 🙂 . Enjoy 😀

I give this film 3.5 Stars out of 5!
