Red Riding Hood

Red Riding Hood (2011)

Genre: Fantasy, Horror, Mystery

This movie should have been awesome but comes out as just alright. The cast chosen for this movie are pretty big names such as Amanda Seyfried, Gary Oldman, Billy Burke and Max Iron ๐Ÿ™‚ . I know they can all act as I have seen them in other things, but in this they are just passable.ย  I felt nothing for any of the characters especially those in the โ€œlove triangleโ€. The โ€œthroes of passionโ€ between these lovers was lack lustre and I quite honestly did not care who survived or who she would end up with ๐Ÿ˜› . The look of the wolf is decent and graphics arenโ€™t bad ๐Ÿ™‚ . The visuals are great and the colour palette of this movie is worth the watch ๐Ÿ˜€ . The story is good enough but predictable and anti-climatic. The twist is pretty good (probably the best part) as you donโ€™t suspect who it is ๐Ÿ˜› . However, I wish the film did not have its annoying anguish and just plain angry moments. Like how the town treated Valerie or bringing in that medieval torture device! The story had plot holes and failed to truly captivate. Though to be fair, this isnโ€™t the worst movie and thanks to the twist, is passable ๐Ÿ™‚ . You can see Twilight movie elements as the one of the directors in this was involved in that movie ๐Ÿ˜› . It tried to focus on teenagers who liked that film rather than focus on the actual story of Red Riding Hood. The main problem is this film tries to be too many things which then leads it to just being an alright movie. ย I am not sure I would recommend this movie but it not the worst I have seen ๐Ÿ˜› . Enjoy ๐Ÿ™‚

I give this film 2 Stars out of 5!

London Road

London Road (2015)

Genre: Adventure, Musical, Mystery

This is such a strange and unique movie that surprisingly captivates you from the beginning to the end ๐Ÿ™‚ . ย Not only is this film a musical based on a real life murder enquiry (and the community around it) it is using โ€œrealโ€ words. Literally the words used from the people and interviews at the time ๐Ÿ˜€ . It is slightly comical hearing real comments taken apart especially during the (basically) beginning section song with the news reporters ๐Ÿ˜› . This is so strange but it had me wanting to watch, enjoy and couldnโ€™t wait to see what song would be created next. The dark tone at the beginning of the movie worked well and the progress of the story changing into a happier tone worked. I loved that the ending and that the sense of darkness has not really disappeared from the community especially with the comment of one of the characters (would like to say who but I would spoil ๐Ÿ˜› ). The musical element doesnโ€™t detract from the story and you become engrossed to see who the murderer is and how the community are impacted. There are some worthy and surprisingly big actors in this movie such as Tom Hardy and Olivia Coleman. This may not be the best musical ever made or real life adaptation, but this was an enjoyable watch ๐Ÿ™‚ . It was dark and grim but made it entertaining and oddly inspiring with what the community did to improve. A very avant-garde movie that I was glad to have watched once ๐Ÿ™‚ . If youโ€™re looking for something different than I think I might recommend this one ๐Ÿ˜€ . Enjoy ๐Ÿ™‚

I give this film 3.5 Stars out of 5!

Devil (2010)

Genre: Horror, Mystery, Thriller

This is a very clever and highly entertaining horror ๐Ÿ™‚ . Itโ€™s the type of horror I prefer as it focusโ€™ on the story and characters rather than full on gore ๐Ÿ˜› . The set up and mood of the film begins quite dark but is highly interesting throwing you straight into the action by creating a death from the start! The idea of this movie is brilliant and unique ๐Ÿ™‚ . I loved the fact that the main characters are trapped (I will try not to spoil) and you had no idea who would be the next victim! The supernatural theme in this movie is quite strong and the narration helped build the suspense and drama. I loved when the narrator mentions about victims who โ€œget in the wayโ€ as it gave a hint to the movie and allowed the film to keep surprising you ๐Ÿ™‚ . The main actors in the lift were all amazing, creating realistic characters and even the most dislikeable character was entertaining (likable for us watchers ๐Ÿ˜› ). The characters outside were also likable and kept you gripped to the story (they werenโ€™t secondary to the action of the main characters). The ending was brilliant and had a great surprise plus a good red herring! A fantastic horror that may not be gory but definitely has death, amazing story and characters ๐Ÿ˜€ . I would definitely watch again and recommend. Enjoy ๐Ÿ™‚

Jack Reacher

Jack Reacher (2012)

Genre: Action, Crime, Mystery

Another Tom Cruise movie where he is a bad-ass out to take every bad guy down with his amazing skills ๐Ÿ˜› ! Therefore, we can admit from the start this movie is going to be predicable and we are going to see familiarity to other roles Tom Cruise has played before. But he does act good ๐Ÿ˜› . The story itself is entertaining, easy to follow and fairly interesting. It has a decent cast alongside Tom Cruise such as Rosamund Pike. The story itself was awesome and kept me guessing ๐Ÿ™‚ . I loved the beginning and how the attack happened ๐Ÿ˜€ ! There is a sense of predictability that works as it keeps the story simple enough to follow yet gives twists and surprises along the way. The fight scenes are fairly good and the film concluded well. It may not be as accurate as it could have been (I havenโ€™t read the books) but I thought this was quite a decently crafted movie ๐Ÿ™‚ . It also had a nice old fashioned feel of an action thriller without using big CGI or explosions. A great film for anyone who likes Tom Cruise or action thriller movies ๐Ÿ™‚ . Enjoy ๐Ÿ˜€

The law has limits. He does not.

Arrival (2016)

Genre: Drama, Mystery, Sci-fi

The first thing I have to mention about Arrival is that I loved Amy Adams in this movie ๐Ÿ˜€ ! She was stunning as her portrayal of Dr Louise Banks and was very believable. Her position of power did not affect the story and it made sense for her to be helping the Alien situation (over anyone else). Plus that beginning introduction was a fabulous opening and helps make us connect with Dr Banks from the outset ๐Ÿ™‚ . Jeremy Renner was also good as Ian Donnelly and also created a believable secondary character. The narrative itself is quite long but doesnโ€™t get boring so the length isnโ€™t really a problem. The mystery of the aliens is created amazingly leaving you with a sense of wonder and curiosity ๐Ÿ™‚ . The surprise twist part way through the movie was seriously amazing and I was so surprised that I never expected it ๐Ÿ˜› . It is a very thought provoking movie and a definitely unique take on the Sci Fi genre. I would seriously recommend it to anyone looking for a Sci Fi / alien move that is different from the rest (in a good way ๐Ÿ˜› ). However, as much as I truly enjoyed the movie and the ending, I have to say it had an edge disappointment. I guess I felt her choice at the end (when you see it you will know) was a little depressive knowing what will come to pass will happen. Also the Aliensโ€™ reason for being here is a little under impressive. However, it was good enough to finish the story. Overall, a great Sci-Fi movie that I definitely recommend ๐Ÿ™‚ ! Enjoy ๐Ÿ˜€

I give this film 4.5 Stars out of 5!

The Girl on the Train

The Girl on the Train (2016)

Genre: Mystery, Thriller

This is a decent thriller and had plenty of hype surrounding it. I canโ€™t deny this is a fairly gripping and enticing thriller that had me captivated from the start. I loved the scenes linking all the women together (plus other characters ๐Ÿ˜› ) and liked seeing the past events that led up to the mystery ๐Ÿ™‚ . I loved that we were following an unstable character and I was gripped (on the edge of my seat) whenever she did something odd ๐Ÿ˜› . I felt for her character straight away and throughout which is thanks to a fabulous performance from Emily Blunt! She was fantastic in this and was a stellar actress ๐Ÿ˜€ . Her acting and make-up (she looked a state but in a good way ๐Ÿ˜› ) made this movie and wonโ€™t be the same if she wasnโ€™t playing Rachel. Others were good too like Scott (Luke Evans) and Megan (Haley Bennett) ๐Ÿ™‚ . However, much as I enjoyed this movie and there are plenty of good things, I have to admit it is not the best Thriller I have even seen. You canโ€™t help but acknowledge Gone Girl (as that been the last thriller on the big screens that was a huge hit) and I donโ€™t know how close this adaption was. But when I was watching this I tried not to allow that to affect me. The pace is at times on the slow side and when the โ€œreveal happensโ€ afterwards the tension isnโ€™t as strong and had an edge of predictability. Though I adored that โ€œRevealโ€ as I was shocked and it was my favourite part ๐Ÿ˜€ . This is an almost hit and it is worth a watch ๐Ÿ™‚ Enjoy ๐Ÿ˜€

I give this film 4 Stars out of 5!

The Forest

The Forest (2016)

Genre: Horror, Mystery, Thriller

This is a decent enough horror with a unique and fairly interesting plot. Natalie Dormer does command the screen and performs great as both Sara and Jess. What I liked was the setting which was absolutely scary and I find the fact the forest is real utterly terrifying ๐Ÿ˜› . I enjoyed the narrative and it did have some decent jumpy sections. I liked the tricky ghosts and her “reveal” near the end of the movie was the best section. I loved the ending as it was different, unique and I loved the graphics around that scene (with the ghost). Overall, the graphics were quite good I loved the hints to the ghosts and how they “killed” ๐Ÿ˜› . This is more of psychological thriller than a straight out horror which I did quite enjoy. However, it has its flaws too ๐Ÿ˜› . The main character much as I loved the actress could be a little annoying and unbearable. I pitied one character because of what Sara does (wouldn’t spoil) and I really did not get Jess. I don’t think it was truly explained why she was there and the ending with that character got slightly cheesy and irritating. A film that had so much promise and potential but trips over its over narrative. However, decent enough horror than can keep you fairly entertained ๐Ÿ™‚ Enjoy ๐Ÿ˜€

I give this film 3.5 Stars out of 5!

Nerve (2016)

Genre: Thriller, Adventure, Crime, Mystery

This film I was looking forward to since I first saw the trailer and it didnโ€™t disappoint!! The story is very clever, relatable and very captivating ๐Ÿ™‚ ! I liked that this mash up of genres (thriller, crime and a hint of romance ๐Ÿ˜› ) keeps us entertained while making the genres work seamlessly. I liked that parts of this film was seen through mobile phone footage and laptop screens as it helped build the atmosphere. I really loved the romance and characters of Vee aka Venus (Emma Roberts) and Ian (Dave Franco) ๐Ÿ™‚ . Also the character of Sydney (Emily Meade) worked and she made me like her and hate her at the same time (which is good as it was needed for the story ๐Ÿ˜› ). There are moments that make me laugh in this movie like the โ€œrunning from a store without clothesโ€ scene! Plus it had terrifying edge of your seat moments like the โ€œwalking across the buildingโ€ and โ€œunder the trainโ€. The element of fun and dark side of the game works well and keeps you entertained throughout! I seriously recommended this movie as it is worth it if you like thrillers with a twist plus it is a great film!! Enjoy ย ๐Ÿ˜€

The Hateful Eight

The Hateful Eight (2015)

Genre: Crime, Drama, Mystery, Western

This is an alright film and I do like the fact that it’s Quentin Tarantino’s eighth film ๐Ÿ™‚ . The story has a Western feel to it but without the overacting, dramatic scenery and those “moments” you only see in the classic Westerns. This film follows more the new type of Western that is more gritty, foul mouthed and “deep” trying to make the audience think ๐Ÿ˜› . I fairly enjoyed this film and I can’t say I was bored (captivated enough to watch till the end) and the narrative was okay. What I loved about this film was that it was sectioned off into chapters ๐Ÿ˜€ . My favourite chapter had to be Chapter 5 as this was the best part of the narrative. It was when the “Who Dunnit?” feel to the story finally and truly connected giving the reason why everyone is there. I did like the set up before this chapter and interactions of the characters though I did feel like something was missing. I liked the background music and it had a good cast. The story is long winded and aside from Chapter 5 the rest are either too offensive for the easily offended or mediocre. The typical too much blood (worse injuries than should have) of Tarantino isn’t actually the worse he has ever done and doesn’t take away too much from the narrative (doesn’t stop the flow). An alright film that I might recommend but not the best in the world. Enjoy ๐Ÿ™‚

I give this film 2.5 Stars out of 5!
