Flatliners

Flatliners (2017)

Genre: Drama, Horror, Sci-fi

I have not seen the original movie so I cannot compare how much better or worse this reboot movie is. However, when seeing the trailer I was very excited to see this and was happily entertained throughout 🙂 . There is an amazing good cast for this film such as Ellen Page (Courtney), Diego Luna (Ray), Nina Dobrev (Marlo) and James Norton (Jamie) who all acted good 🙂 . I believed the friendship and how the team got together, plus I really enjoyed the beginning as it set up the “drama” of the story well 🙂 . The scares in this film may not give you nightmares but will definitely make you jump and I certainly jumped a few times 😛 . The graphics of the “supernatural” world was great and I was on edge when the “horror” elements appeared. The worst scary scene but my favourite had to be the “Morgue” scene 😀 . I also really enjoyed the surprise in who would die first, as that was surprising and I never could have guessed 😛 .  However, I did enjoy the first half more and the ending could have finished better. Don’t get me wrong, it ended fine and I did not have a problem but it could have had a more dramatic climax. Also my least favourite character was Sophia (Kiersey Clemons) but I understood why she was there (kind of 😛 ).  Though, I really did enjoy it and liked the attention to small details such as 9 years ago Courtney holds a flip phone but a smart phone in the present day 🙂 . I think (seeing other people’s reaction to this movie) that you aren’t going to love this movie if you’re a fan of the original. However, if you looking for a rather entertaining movie that is not too scary to watch but jumpy, then this is for you 🙂 .Enjoy 😀

I give this film 4 Stars out of 5!

Be Afraid

Be Afraid (2017)

Genre: Horror, Sci-Fi, Thriller

This is another horror and supernatural creature movie which terrorises a family who have just moved to a small town in Pennsylvania. The story itself is alright and can keep you fairly entertained throughout 🙂 .  The opening scene was very good and was my favourite part 😀 . It through us straight into the drama and has us interested to find out what was threatening the family? I liked the character and look of Nathan (Michael Leone) and his scenes with the monster 🙂 . I also loved the scene with Heather (Jaimi Paige) in the bath tub as I thought at this point, we would see more of the monsters and that the story would get more gripping. The overall acting from everyone was okay and CGI was good too 🙂 . However, the story was not the most captivating I have ever seen and was almost at the point of boredom 😛 . I did not really care about the family and the movie left too many unanswered questions. Such as why are the creatures taking people or why (won’t spoil who 😛 ) did they keep the monsters hidden from everyone else? Plus the ending was ridiculous . I mean it was confusing because at one moment we have Dr. John Chambers (Brian Krause) looking for the child then we are given an ending. The film just quickly gave us a kind of solution without an explanation. This movie had potential at the beginning but wasted it on a rubbish storyline and a terrible ending. This was not even scary 😛 . This is a film I would not recommend as it has a forgettable story and no scares. Though, it may be for you if you like not scary horrors. Enjoy 😛

I give this film 1.5 Stars out of 5!

Rogue

Rogue (2007)

Genre: Action, Adventure, Horror

This movie is about a group of tourists who get trapped on a small mud island right in the territory of a “rogue” crocodile. This movie does sound like one of those B-Movies that you love to sit and laugh at its impossible storylines, plot holes and terrible CGI 😛 . However, this film is definitely not one of them. I was happily surprised by its plausible narrative and it was very interesting and captivating throughout 🙂 . I loved the beginning of this movie and the newspaper clips about “monster crocodile attacks” giving us a hint of what is to come for the rest of the movie 🙂 . I liked that in the first 30 minutes of this movie, we were allowed to get to know each individual character and I did not know who would be next (or first) to be “killed” 😛 . The suspense was great and there were some surprising deaths plus dramatic tension such as the “climb across the line” scene.  I was hooked as they tried to figure a way to survive and the way they defeat it was plausible which I appreciated 🙂 . The graphics were good and I liked how the crocodile looked realistic (as much as it could be as it was a rogue crocodile 😛 ).  The scenery was also very good and I absolutely loved the end credit music of “Never Smile at a Crocodile” 😛 . I wish though, I was more interested in the main character Pete McKell (Michael Vartan) because as much as I did not hate him…I did not really like him either. Though his character is not terrible and does not affect the overall enjoyment of this movie 🙂 .  Overall, this film is surprisingly enjoyable and great for anyone who loves monster horror flicks 😀 . Enjoy 😀

I give this film 4.5 Stars out of 5!

The Babadook

The Babadook (2014)

Genre: Drama, Horror

This is an unusual but very entertaining film that is certainly for those who prefer a horror movie focused on story than gore 🙂 . The movie starts off oddly but it is intriguing and it continues to remind us of the opening scene and allude to the car crash as the film continues. I liked and disliked the mother Amelia (Essie Davis) and child Samuel (Noah Wiseman) in this movie as we discovered more of their personalities. However, what I did like about both characters was that even in their most unlikable moments they were still understandable. However, my possible dislike did vanish as I got more gripped in the tale especially when Amelia starts to believe. The idea of isolation was great and the aunt was awful in this, plus the scene at the birthday party was good 🙂 . I loved the entrance to the Babadook and the scenes of his appearances. His story was great, the idea of the book and the “Babadook, dook, dook” was awesome 😀 . There are plenty of creepy moments in this and surprises 🙂 . I very much enjoyed how the atmosphere of dread and uneasiness never left. The twist near the end was great and I was unsure with the outcome making this film not predicable. I also very enjoyed how they “defeated” the Babadook and overall ending of the movie 🙂 . It is a nice change to find a surprisingly pleasant and happier ending to a horror movie 😛 . This is slow steady paced film with plenty of creepy scary moments that is great for those who love horrors that make you pay attention 🙂 . I definitely recommend this movie though I did not find this scary 😛 . Enjoy 😀

IT

IT (2017)

Genre: Adventure, Drama, Horror

This looked fabulous from the trailers and when I finally got to see it, the film certainly did not disappoint 😛 . The narrative is amazing and captivating from the beginning to the end. The beginning scene is very good for a horror film without being over the top with the “gore”. It had a perfect balance of scariness and an intriguing storyline plus after seeing the first clip it gives you a hint of how the rest of the movie will follow. Bill Skarsgård as the clown Pennywise was fantastic 😀 !! He looked creepy and terrifying while his outfit looked amazing 🙂 . The overall visual aesthetics of the film is quite memorable especially its use of the colours such as Georgie’s yellow coat and the red balloon 🙂 . Georgie (Jackson Robert Scott) was an adorable actor in this and the overall lead children were good. I liked them all but some I preferred more such as Eddie (Jack Dylan Grazer) and Beverly (Sophia Lillis) 🙂 .Their relationships (the entire group of friends) were sweet and this made us like them more. This movie had some great scary scenes such as Pennywise in the basement (in the water) and the projector plus the graphics in this film are fantastic 🙂 . What I loved in this film was the discovery the children found as the movie continued and I never knew who would be killed next 😛 . However, the only downside I would say was that this film did not terrify me. I think I was more afraid for the characters rather than the movie being scary. This film is certainly worth the watch and I cannot wait to see what Part 2 will bring 😀 . Enjoy 🙂

I give this film 4.5 Stars out of 5!

Blade

Blade (1998)

Genre: Action, Horror, Marvel

Another Marvel movie but this one is before the Marvel Cinematic Universe and it’s a horror 😛 . I had not seen Blade before but I really enjoyed this movie 🙂 . The storyline kept me highly entertained throughout and I was hooked from the beginning. The start of movie throws you straight into the story and the scene with the nightclub is a great scene 😀 . It is very interesting to watch as well as being a great introduction to Blade (Wesley Snipes) and the world he has to live in. Wesley Snipes performs Blade impressively as his character’s personality does not seem to falter and it is different from other Marvel Superheroes 🙂 . His lady interest (though more of a sidekick) Karen (N’Bushe Wright) is a welcome addition as she wants to fight rather than be saved and I actually believed her which is refreshing 😛 . The main villain Deacon Frost (Stephen Dorff) is a decent bad guy and his cool but cruel attitudes to others in his way makes him impressive. The fight scenes are well choreographed and fitted the story well (that it wasn’t placed there for no reason 😛 ). The graphics and how the vampires die was good and I liked the turn to skeleton death the most 🙂 . However, the graphic aren’t as good as they probably would have been but it doesn’t affect the movie. It ends well and you can’t wait to watch a sequel 😀 . This is a highly entertaining and generally fantastic movie for any Marvel fan or fans of Vampire horror films 😀 . Enjoy 🙂

I give this film 4.5 Stars out of 5!

The Fog

The Fog (2005)

Genre: Horror

This horror is a remake of the original The Fog movie in 1980, and I can’t say how true it is as I have not seen it. However, as much as this film is passable to watch from beginning to end I don’t know if I can call this a horror. I mean sure, we have ghosts, deaths and plenty of things happening in the dark but I wasn’t scared. The thing I liked was learning about the past and the connections of who was being aimed at (by the ghost) and why 🙂 . The pace treaded along slowly and wasn’t the most entertaining. I did like the scene with the “boat party” though I do wish it had been done better. I was captivated when the child was being chased and when the “fog” was taking over the town 🙂 . There are a few plot holes and unanswered questions that should have been answered to make this more interesting. Such as, why does Nick need two love interests when I barely saw him in love with one of them? They never questioned Nick’s Uncle’s face (which was rotting) or the fact the ghosts “graffitied” a church. I though the ghosts were from 1800’s so why did they use spray cans?? The CGI is not very good but I did like the ghost ship in the night 🙂 . The characters are not very deep and are cliché of an early 2000’s horror (or any horror actually 😛 ). To be fair, I was entertained enough to watch to the end. Moments in this were promising, although the movie’s end could not save it. For as much I as I didn’t mind it, it was more of a ghost (and strange) romance movie than a horror which was quite predicable 😛 . This was a confusing plot that wasn’t very scary and I wished I had just watched the original. Enjoy 😀

Don’t Breathe

Don’t Breathe (2016)

Genre: Crime, Horror, Thriller

This is one of the most unique and truly enjoyable horror movies I have seen in a long time 🙂 . The twist is (mostly told in trailers, other reviews and blurbs of the film so watch out 😛 ) amazing and kept me hooked throughout. The main three characters Rocky (Jane Levy), Alex (Dylan Minnette) and Money (Daniel Zovatto) are not likable characters especially Money. They (Rocky and Alex) are given reasons for their bad behaviour but you aren’t supposed to like them initially. However, when the robbing of the wrong house begins everything changed! I loved the constant shocks and surprises from The Blind Man (Stephen Lang) were brilliant 🙂 . He was intense and terrifying plus the more we got to know him the more I felt for the teenagers. The fight scenes were great and the fear, nail-biting, edge of your seat moments were great 🙂 . I loved the scene where the survivors are running from the cellar in the dark 😀 . I loved the danger element within that scene and loved that they must have actually filmed in the dark as their pupils were dilated. The main thing that is great in this movie was the facial expressions and body language of the characters especially Rocky and The Blind Man. She showed her fear and anguish through her facial expressions which had you hooked 😀 ! Plus Stephen Lang’s portrayal showed vulnerability, sadness, and anger which made him an intense character I have seen from a horror film for a long while 🙂 . I also loved the ending which allows a promise of a sequel and if not, left it with a great feeling 🙂 . A feeling that neither one of the characters are as good as the other leaving you questioning who truly is the victim? A great horror / thriller film that is very unique, great for horror fans and will leave you wanting more 😛 . Enjoy 😀

I give this film 5 Stars out of 5!

The Shallows

The Shallows (2016)

Genre: Thriller, Horror, Drama

This is an alright shark attack movie that can keep you fairly entertained from beginning to the end 🙂 . Blake Lively was quite good as Nancy as her acting in this movie (through her characters struggles) was believable and you felt for her 🙂 . I liked that she was a medical student and how she was “saving herself” when she was dealing with her injuries. The scenery was very pretty and I liked her relationship with the seagull (though I did feel kind of cheesy… 😛 ). The flow of the movie worked and did keep you watching plus you become very intrigued to see how she could survive. The attack of the Shark was very good and I liked how when one stranger was killed we weren’t allowed to see it. We just watched her reaction which was pretty good 🙂 . I also loved the opening scene with the child and I even liked how the shark was defeated (even if it may have been a little unbelievable 😛 ). The CGI is an issue throughout this movie. At times it looked unique with the phone images integrating with the movie then at times looks poor. Especially the graphics of the shark is very questionable at times. Another problem with this movie is the shark’s motives. I assume it is just some seriously blood thirsty monster that just enjoys eating humans even if there is a massive whale carcass. Though the films suggests it is a normal shark so then that makes you question its motives throughout the entire movie creating a sense of unbelievably. However, the film is alright and keeps you entertained. This is good for anyone who likes survival thriller against a monster attack movie but it is nothing “Wow”. Enjoy 🙂
