Goodbye Christopher Robin

Goodbye Christopher Robin (2017)

Genre: Biography, Family Film, History

I was excited to see this biography film about the life of the author A.A.Milne who created Winnie the Pooh πŸ™‚ . I had expected this to be similar to β€œSaving Mr. Banks” which was an endearing film and was also about the author of a famous literary character. However, I tried not to judge this film on that and enjoyed this tale throughout πŸ™‚ . The scenery and costumes were great and I did feel captivated by their world πŸ˜€ . The acting was superb and I believed every single character especially Christopher Robin (Will Tilston) who was fabulous πŸ˜€ . The story throws to you straight into the worse part of this story at the beginning which leaves you on an edge of sorrow as you watch the rest (until the film catches back up with itself in the timeline). I loved the scene in the forest with Alan (Domhnall Gleeson) and Christopher Robin as his imagination with the snow was great πŸ™‚ . I even liked the post traumatic stress disorder Milne was suffering appear in the movie as it helped us understand his character more. Daphne (Margot Robbie) was hard to understand and she became my least favourite character. The film did not shy away from the hard issues Christopher endured and the narrative was very enlightening. I never knew that he had to go through this and found the film had more of a depressive feel than heart-warming. Though, during the World War 2 section I completely felt for Milne and it was a rather sad scene (when you watch you will know πŸ˜› ). This is an overall, great movie that is worth the watch but this maybe more suited to adults than for the whole family πŸ™‚ . Enjoy πŸ˜€

I give this film 3.5 Stars out of 5!

Victoria and Abdul

Victoria and Abdul (2017)

Genre: Biography, Drama, History

I was very excited to see this movie from the trailers as it appeared to be a charming story about the unusual friendship between Queen Victoria (Judi Dench) and a young Indian clerk (Ali Fazal). The main two actors were great as their characters as they were believable, their friendship chemistry good and Judi Dench looked fabulous as Queen Victoria πŸ˜€ . My favourite actor in this was Eddie Izzard as Bertie the Prince of Wales who was amazing πŸ˜€ . He was very convincing as his character throughout and I liked him even at his worst (as it fitted the character’s persona). This film was quite humorous at times and my favourite moments were from Mohammed’s (Adeel Akhtar) jokes about the English food as Barbaric πŸ˜› . The narrative was informative (as I have not heard of this story in history before), scenery and costumes were great plus I was not bored πŸ™‚ . I liked the speech Victoria gave when threatened with β€œinsanity” and the Ali Fazal’s performance near the end was very good πŸ™‚ . The actual end scene was sweet which matched the pleasantness of the movie (when it had time to be πŸ˜› ). However, part way through the movie I lost my interest as it became a little depressive and I found the more I watch, the more I questioned Abdul Karim. Like why did he lie or not tell the entire truth? Though, this is minor but did not keep me from being captivated as it could have been. This is a decent watch and worth it for anyone wanting to learn more about Queen Victoria but I can’t say I would be rushing to see this movie again πŸ˜› . Enjoy πŸ˜€

I give this film 3.5 Stars out of 5!

Dunkirk

Dunkirk (2017)

Genre: War, Drama, Action, History

I have never watched the original Dunkirk so I am unsure how close this version is to that movie and or real events. However, I found Christopher Nolan’s version to be fantastic πŸ˜€ ! I was captivated and enthralled from start to end πŸ™‚ ! I loved the opening as it throws you straight into the drama and danger! There are big names in this movie such as Tom Hardy, Mark Rylance, Cillian Murphy and of course Harry Styles. Harry Styles who played soldier Alex was actually pretty good and you forget who he is (being a singer and so on πŸ˜› ) as the film continues. The big drama scenes such as being trapped in a sinking ship were all awesome and entertaining πŸ™‚ . It keeps you on edge of your seat as you are unsure who will survive or how the situation will develop. There is a non-linear narrative because we are following more than one character. I personally loved this unique way of presenting the story of Dunkirk πŸ˜€ . I really liked how we saw the same scene multiple times from different perspectives, without it being predictable, cheesy or boring. It was subtle, flowed well and I quite enjoyed seeing where each β€œimportant” character was in relation to the drama. My favourite characters were Collins (Jack Lowden) and Tommy (Fionn Whitehead) πŸ™‚ . There are some highly emotional moments and a sense of pride when the β€œending” happens (when you watch you will know). This war film is certainly more of a survival suspenseful movie but it certainly worth the watch for anyone one who loves historical genres πŸ™‚ . I even liked the sense of not everything finishing off well and that not everyone makes it home (I won’t say any more as I don’t want to spoil πŸ˜› ). I certainly recommend this movie πŸ˜€ . Enjoy πŸ˜€

I give this film 5 Stars out of 5!

Hidden Figures

Hidden Figures (2017)

Genre: Biography, Drama, History

When I first saw this trailer I was so excited to watch this as I had heard so many good reviews πŸ™‚ . It definitely did not disappoint πŸ˜€ . This is a great movie that explores the problems back in the 1960’s America and the amazing efforts these three women did for NASA. I had not heard of these women before this year and was amazed at how smart they were. The movie explored the appalling attitudes they had to deal with tastefully and made you feel great to be a woman (or feel great for them πŸ˜› ) when they succeed. Β The outfits are great, the set fabulous and the background music (mixture of modern and classic) worked brilliantly for the film πŸ™‚ . There are some epic lines that resonate throughout such as Mary’s when answering a question β€œI wouldn’t have to. I’d already be one” πŸ™‚ . The court room was also a fabulous scene and loved it when Dorothy was walking down the corridor with all of her colleges (won’t say not more as I don’t want to spoil πŸ˜› ). There are some emotional scenes as well and my favourite (emotional) scene was then Katherine had to justify her trip to the toilet. Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer and Janelle MonΓ‘e were all fabulous as the leading women πŸ˜€ . I loved the ending and learning about what happened afterwards with these three women. A great movie for all who want to learn about the real people behind the Space Race (NASA) and the struggles they went through to succeed. I definitely recommend this movie for everyone (probably more for women then family πŸ˜› ). Enjoy πŸ˜€

Hacksaw Ridge

Hacksaw Ridge (2017)

Genre: Drama, History, War

Hacksaw Ridge is a about a WWII American Army Medic that did the extraordinary. The story and how the director Mel Gibson, decided to shoot this movie is done quite fantastically πŸ™‚ . It is compelling, entertaining, action packed and heart wrenching from start to finish πŸ˜€ . The beginning is slower than people might expect from a war movie but I enjoyed it and thought it was needed πŸ™‚ . It helps us understand Desmond Doss (Andrew Garfield) and makes you hooked before the battle. The minute the β€œwar” begins the action starts quickly. It is very intense and constant. It was an edge of your seat experience and the shocks were plentiful πŸ™‚ . I was gutted when some characters died and the β€œgore” content was good. It was an acceptable amount. It showed what it was like without being too much for an audience to watch. I loved the lines β€œPlease Lord, Help Me Get One More” and the awesome acting of Andrew Garfield πŸ˜€ . He performed Desmond wonderfully and you felt for him through his struggle before the war. The group of soldiers he was with were also good and I was laughing with them at the β€œintroduction” near the beginning πŸ™‚ . The angry moments that you may get for our main character is pushed aside by the time the movie ends. This will leave you awestruck and it has become one of my favourite war movies of all time πŸ˜€ . This movie you have to watch so therefore, I definitely recommend! Enjoy πŸ˜€ !

Odd Thomas

Odd Thomas (2013)

Genre: Comedy, Fantasy, Horror

This is an entertaining enough film with a decent narrative. I liked the beginning as it throws you straight into the story and the action straight off πŸ˜€ . The plot line treads along quite well, builds the danger slowly but not in a boring way and ended fabulously! The section near the end (not the actual end scene) was one of my favourites in this movie πŸ˜€ !! It was shocking (admit a little cheesy) and finished the characters great. I liked all of the characters even Stormy (Addison Timlin) πŸ˜› . They had great personalities and really worked for the story but I wished that some of the actors had performed that bit better. However, Anton Yelchin was brilliant as his role as Odd Thomas and so was Willem Dafoe as his father Chief Wyatt Porter πŸ™‚ . I loved the look of the demons and how they helped build the story (hinting who might be in danger next πŸ˜› ). I also liked the “dog chase scene” and I liked how he dealt with the ghosts (and how they disappeared). However, there are some things I would have liked exploring more (like the gateway to hell) and after that shocking near end scene it takes a kind of passive finish. Plus some parts are quite predicable. Overall, a solid and enjoyable film for anyone who liked ghost or fantasy movies πŸ™‚ Enjoy πŸ˜€

I give this film 3 Stars out of 5!

The Finest Hours

The Finest Hours (2016)

Genre: Action, Drama, History

The dramatised real life event of a sea rescue crew created by Disney πŸ™‚ . It is a very good film πŸ™‚ . It kept me very entertained, captivated and I really enjoyed it. The cast is pretty decent line up! Chris Pine, Eric Bana and Holly Grainger πŸ™‚ . They act pretty well and suit the period. I liked the background music for this film and the graphics are great. What makes this film is the narrative. The first disaster with the ship breaking was very captivating and interesting. The suspense as the narrative continued was awesome and I was desperate for someone in the film to notice what had happened πŸ˜› . It has an edge of your seat feel in parts of the narrative and the storm scenes were impressive. Quite honestly, the best part of this film begin with the ship being wrecked and all the scenes with the crew trying to survive / being rescued. The normal life scenes weren’t as good but overall the film is very entertaining. I liked the character of Ray Sybert (Casey Affleck) the best and I loved the ending including the end credits. A great film full of suspense, drama, shocking deaths and has a great nostalgic feel πŸ™‚ . Enjoy πŸ™‚

I give this film 4.5 Stars out of 5!

12 Years a Slave

12 Years a Slave (2013)

Genre: Biography, Drama, History

This is a true story of Solomon Northup who was forced to be a slave during the 19th century. I can’t deny this is a great film that explores the terrible truths that Soloman and many others had to deal with. The beginning of the film throws you straight into the action and starting off with a feeling of something bad straight away. This feeling gets worse at certain points which works for this film and some scenes (like the almost hanging scene) drag on far longer than needed. This creates an awesome film technique that makes the scenes almost uncomfortable to watch which makes your more empathetic to Solomon’s plight. There is a great cast within this film (Brad Pitt, Michael Fassbender and Benedict Cumberbatch) and act brilliantly thought the work of Lupita Nyong’o and Chiwetel Ejiofor were stunning πŸ˜€ ! The ending sequence was the best part and made the film complete. πŸ™‚ Β This is a film that is worth a watch even just once πŸ™‚ . Enjoy πŸ˜€

Spotlight

Spotlight (2016)

Genre: Biography, Drama, History

This is a biographical film about the real events from the tem Spotlight who reported on the abuse hidden by the Catholic Church. This is one amazing film πŸ˜€ ! The cast is stunning; Mark Ruffalo, Michael Keaton, Rachel McAdams, Liev Schreiber and Brian d’Archy James, who created believable characters πŸ˜€ . I was captivated the entire way through the film which it is quite long but feels like it needs to be. The narrative itself should be a horror film with the events that happened to the victims but it works in a way that you are with Spotlight wanting them to succeed instead. It creates an authentic movie making you feel and understand the victims without overly depressing the audience. By all accounts this film about reporters and lawyers should be dull but personally I was quite gripped and was captivated πŸ™‚ . There are plenty of great scenesΒ  in this film but I loved the ending which had a happy ending (ish) and ends so abruptly that you are left wanting more πŸ™‚ ! A fantastic film that I seriously recommend! Enjoy πŸ™‚

I give this film 5 Stars out of 5!
