Wonder Woman

Wonder Woman (2017)

Genre: Action, Adventure, Fantasy

I have been looking forward to seeing this movie since we first saw Gal Gadot’s perform in Batman V. Superman. She did not disappoint and this has been my favourite DC movie so far 😀 . Finally, we have a new DC film that does not make me pull apart it narrative after I have watched it and I would look forward to watching again. The story had me captivated from beginning to the end and I really enjoyed seeing Wonder Woman fighting in World War 1. I know this may not be historically accurate and many people would have preferred her in World War 2 but I still very much enjoyed it and it worked for the narrative. Diana’s look was amazing and Gal Gadot’s portrayal of her was stunning, fierce and impressive plus I can’t wait to watch more of her 😀 . I liked the character of Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) as he was believable and endearing. I also liked the secretary Etta (Lucy Davis) as she was a charming addition the story 🙂 . The film was funny, entertaining and did bring a tear to my eye (can’t say why as that would spoil 😛 ). They told us stuff about her past, “who she really is” and I though the mixing of her world (the Amazons) worked well with the World War story. My favourite scene has to be when Wonder Woman fights across No Man’s Land 🙂 . Dr. Maru (Elena Anaya) looked terrifying though I feel we could have seen her defeated better. However, I loved the twist on who Ares truly was in this movie 😀 . I loved the relationship between Steve and Diana but I know it can’t last which is a shame. The look of the movie was great, I was captivated and was a worthy movie of Wonder Woman 😀 . I also found this movie to be less depressive then normal DC movies which I liked. I seriously recommend this movie 😀 . Enjoy 🙂

I give this film 5 Stars out of 5!

The Mummy

The Mummy (2017)

Genre: Action, Adventure, Fantasy

There are many bad reviews from critics about this summer’s blockbuster but I really liked it 🙂 . I found this story easy to follow (in a good way), I loved the Egyptian back story and I was entertained throughout. I really liked the Mummy Princess Ahmanet (Sofia Boutella) and her story plus the actress performed her great 😀 . She was scary, looked amazing and when she “returns” her graphics as a Mummy were cool. I liked the CGI on the mummies and liked how she “turned” others, plus her first attack on the mortals in England was pretty cool 🙂 . I liked the main character of Nick Morton (Tom Cruise) and he was a likable character to follow. Plus I really liked his flashbacks / imagination with the Princess which helped keep the story flowing 🙂 . There are some big moments which are cool such as the plane crash, underwater mummies, and when the glass turns to sand in London.  I also liked the “secret company” that becomes involved as it hints to a possible other movie (even a series of movies) and gave a new element to the typical Egyptian mummy story. However, there are some rough edges to the tale and I do sense that they did try and shove too many tales without flowing properly. The action scenes aren’t the best so fans of action may feel disappointed. The weakest part for me was Jenny (Annabelle Wallis). She was great at first (I found her moment seeing the mummies with Nick in the church funny 😛 ) but as she went on, she became irritable and not interesting. I did not care what happened to her and liked the Mummy better 😛 . Though she is minor and you can still enjoy the movie 🙂 . This is a really good movie that I would happily watch again but I am a little biased as I loved watching adventure movies involving Egyptian tales 😛 . This is worth the watch and I can’t wait to see what comes next in the Dark Universe franchise 😀 Enjoy 🙂

I give this film 4 Stars out of 5!

Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge

Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge (2017)

Genre: Action, Adventure, Fantasy

The ending to the great Pirates of the Caribbean franchise (or so they say 😛 ) which is wonderful for those who love those movies 🙂 . The narrative is good and entertaining throughout. The beginning scene was really amazing as it connected us with the new character Henry (Brenton Thwaites) straight away while giving us nostalgia by reminding us of older story lines 😀 . I really did like the character of Henry and I did like the new addition of Carina (Kaya Scodelario) especially her role. I enjoyed as we learnt more of her past and appreciated her role as a smart but not overly rich pretty girl making her different from other female roles in this franchise 🙂 . I also loved the look of the villains, loved the new main villain Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem) and their half rotten appearance. How the ship “ate” was also great 😀 . The scene where we see how that crew (the villains) came to be was one of my favourites and there are plenty of good action scenes. I also appreciate that we got to see the majority of the old cast back (Johnny Depp still fabulous as Captain Jack 🙂 ) and the cameo of Paul McCartney was amazing 😀 !! The humour is also strong especially the scene of the guillotine 😛 . However, as much as I loved this I am uncertain of if I loved this out of pure loyalty. The narrative at times is not captivating enough to enthral and this still is nothing compared to the original movie. I felt a spark had disappeared somewhere either in the narrative or script of maybe they couldn’t live up to expectation. It’s a shame but this is still way better than the fourth instalment 😛 . Overall, a strong finish that may not be a good as the original but great for any fan wanting to see their favourite characters one last time 🙂 . Plus the monkey is back so I am pleased 😛 . Enjoy 🙂

Red Riding Hood

Red Riding Hood (2011)

Genre: Fantasy, Horror, Mystery

This movie should have been awesome but comes out as just alright. The cast chosen for this movie are pretty big names such as Amanda Seyfried, Gary Oldman, Billy Burke and Max Iron 🙂 . I know they can all act as I have seen them in other things, but in this they are just passable.  I felt nothing for any of the characters especially those in the “love triangle”. The “throes of passion” between these lovers was lack lustre and I quite honestly did not care who survived or who she would end up with 😛 . The look of the wolf is decent and graphics aren’t bad 🙂 . The visuals are great and the colour palette of this movie is worth the watch 😀 . The story is good enough but predictable and anti-climatic. The twist is pretty good (probably the best part) as you don’t suspect who it is 😛 . However, I wish the film did not have its annoying anguish and just plain angry moments. Like how the town treated Valerie or bringing in that medieval torture device! The story had plot holes and failed to truly captivate. Though to be fair, this isn’t the worst movie and thanks to the twist, is passable 🙂 . You can see Twilight movie elements as the one of the directors in this was involved in that movie 😛 . It tried to focus on teenagers who liked that film rather than focus on the actual story of Red Riding Hood. The main problem is this film tries to be too many things which then leads it to just being an alright movie.  I am not sure I would recommend this movie but it not the worst I have seen 😛 . Enjoy 🙂

Beauty and the Beast

Beauty and the Beast (2017)

Genre: Family Film, Fantasy, Musical, Disney

I have been very excited to see this new real life version of the classic Disney animation from 1991 and I know I was not the only one 🙂 ! The film did not disappoint 😀 ! The story stays mostly honest to the original story which I truly enjoyed and appreciated the nostalgic feeling you get (if you loved the first film 😛 ). The songs were great, they were pleasant to hear (even if you think the original songs were better 😛 ) and I loved the new additions which I assume are from the musical. My favourite song version in this movie was “Evermore” sang by Dan Stevens 🙂 . The costumes and set looked appealing, “Disney” and I loved that it has attempted to look traditional 18th century France! I think it did a great job with the period setting, with the dress sense of the all the characters (maybe not Belles 😛 ) and the CGI on the Beast and objects were great. The film began great and ends wonderfully. The cast is epic (Emma Watson, Dan Stevens, Luke Evans and Josh Gad to name a few) and all performed fabulous in this film 😀 . What I also loved about this movie was as much I as appreciate the director staying true the original, they still showed new stuff such as more in depth backgrounds. We learnt more about Belle, Beast and what would have happened to the servants at the Beast’s castle. I loved the relationship between Gaston and LeFou plus the development of LeFou was great 🙂 . His line in the mob songs was very cool. Overall, a really good real life animation that any fan of the original will enjoy and it is great for the entire family 🙂 . Enjoy 😀

Kong: Skull Island

Kong: Skull Island (2017)

Genre: Action, Adventure, Fantasy

The newest version of the King Kong story with a pretty decent cast and looked awesome from the trailer. The film is alright. I can’t say it was the best because it definitely wasn’t but I can’t say it was the worst either. Let’s start with things like I did like 🙂 . The cast was great Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, Samuel L Jackson and John C Reilly to name a few. The deaths were pretty shocking, at times surprising and I liked the fact you did not know what creature you might find next 😀 . Some of the characters I liked and wanted to survive. Kong looked good and I liked his entrance (and fight scene) in the 1974 storyline. The monsters looked and were shocking like that “Spider” monster part way through the movie. I also enjoyed when the attack (from Kong) at the beginning happened and liked that the group was separated 🙂 . However, as much I liked it…the storyline was plausible enough to run but not enough to captivate. The “art” that made it look like 70s editing did not help this movie but hindered. The slow motion fights and moments like dramatically cutting a monster just made the scene cheesy and became repetitive. The focus of the slow motion and the ‘money’ shots of the monsters affected the characters and as much as I might have felt for the characters at the beginning I began to lose any attachment to them. They were swallowed by the poor CGI moments bringing even their good acting skills (I have seen these actors before and I know they can act) down to its level. Don’t get me wrong the film is alright and has merit 🙂 . I did enjoy some parts and liked that they had tried to imitate classic monster flicks in the movie. I just wish that the whole cheesy element had not turned up and wish the narrative was stronger than the CGI. This film could have been so much better. A film that is good for any looking for a monster flick that is an easy watch with the odd surprise 🙂 . Enjoy 😀

The Great Wall

The Great Wall (2017)

Genre: Action, Adventure, Fantasy

This is a decent movie that I really enjoyed 😀 . The storyline was great, kept me entertained the entire way through and was captivating 🙂 . I loved the graphics for the fight scenes, the monsters were simple to grasp but impressive and I believed them enough for the story. I even felt for the characters that had to go against them and felt for them as they tried to “defeat” the monsters. The design was great in this movie with the different colours for each part of the army 🙂 . The characters were great in this film and I felt like I got to know each one and their reason for being here. The majority of the cast is Asian (like Tian Jing) which is expected and great to see as this film is set in China 😛 . Plus the reasons the “Westerners” (like the lead actor Matt Damon) are fighting for China (and here to save the day) was plausible for the narrative to continue. However, as much as I liked the fight scenes, the suspense, the edge of your seat actions, drama and shock (and sad) deaths the graphics aren’t that great. The beginning sequence of the movie had shocking low quality and had me worried that the quality would let the movie down. The good news is that you forget the quality and it does seem to get better as the movie continues 🙂 . So I suggest you try and ignore the first clip and appreciate the film 😛 . A great film for anyone looking for looking for a decent Action and Fantasy movie! Enjoy 😀

Assassin’s Creed

Assassin’s Creed (2016)

Genre: Action, Adventure, Fantasy

This film is alright in general and quite good to watch 🙂 . It gives me everything it was supposed to but I was left feeling underwhelmed by the end of the movie. I think this is a film you have to have played the games beforehand, as I don’t know how true to the story it was or even if the ending was trying to lead onto the narrative of the game. However, I did really enjoy the “Spanish” side the story as the fight scenes were impressive and the look of the Assassins was stylish 🙂 ! There is a pretty decent cast in this film as well; Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard and Jeremy Irons 😀 . I liked the Animus, the centre where the people were held and I liked how they were accessing the ancestors’ memories. I also like the look of the characters outside of the “Spanish” World and the “reason” for the narrative was good 🙂 . The overall movie was very entertaining and the pace was fairly decent. One of the main downside to this film was the other descendents of the assassins. They were irritating and at times wooden compared to the great acting of the main characters. The ending scene was the weakest of the entire film, they offered hints that did not appear (with a certain character) and the last shot was a tad cheesy 😛 . Altogether, a decent film that the fans of the game might enjoy but not the best movie in world 😛 . Enjoy 🙂

A Monster Calls

A Monster Calls (2016)

Genre: Drama, Fantasy

This is a unique fantasy movie about a boy struggling with his mum’s illness who meets a tree monster. I don’t know if I would call this film a family friendly movie but children can watch this film without being bored. I really enjoyed this movie, was captivated throughout and the story was different 🙂 . I loved the watercolour animation effect during the Monster’s stories as it was intriguing and flowed into the normal narrative well. The film has plenty of tender moments in this movie that might bring a tear to your eye 😛 . Those mostly responsibly for causing tears were Felicity Jones (Mum) and Lewis MacDougall (Conor). Felicity Jones played a caring but ill mother and Lewis MacDougall’s performance was stellar as he portrays Conor’s emotions as it tries to cope with his situation. His silent struggle against bullies was profoundly effective and you root for him when he makes himself “noticed” 😀 . Also the relationships between Conor and his Mum, and between Conor and his Monster (Liam Neeson) are effective in this film 🙂 . The twist in “who called the monster” was nice and I like the hint / theory of who the Monster actually is (I won’t say my theory as I don’t want to spoil 😛 ). The human problems mixed well with the fantasy and this is a stunning story which makes this film a definitely must watch 😛 . Enjoy 😀

I give this film 5 Stars out of 5!
