Strange Magic

Strange Magic (2015)

Genre: Animation, Adventure, Comedy, Family Film

I am a fan of animated films about romance and fantasy plus at times I donโ€™t mind cheesy films ๐Ÿ˜› . This started really good and had me quite captivated with its introduction. I liked the idea of the two sides (one good and one bad) and the animation was great ๐Ÿ™‚ . The CGI was fabulous and the look of the creatures was fantastic ๐Ÿ˜€ . My favourite creature was the Imp who was adorable and his reason for being in this film was worth it. I also loved the image of the fairies and their colours and I did appreciate the Bog King (Alan Cumming) not being pretty ๐Ÿ˜› . The story is very predictable from the beginning the story starts but I was willing to forgive this. However, by the time the story hit half way (about the time Marianne (Evan Rachel Wood) went to find her sister on her own) the story got gradually worse. The cheesiness became unbearable as it continued (and I was trying to stomach as much as I could) with no surprises in this narrative. The romance was fine but I preferred Dawnโ€™s (Meredith Anne Bull) and Sunnyโ€™s (Elijah Kelly) rather than the possibility of the main charactersโ€™. I found their โ€œromanceโ€ ridiculously too quick (it was barely a few hours maybe less) for True Love ๐Ÿ˜› . The songs are good and catchy (plus modern) but I found this film was over reliant on them. However, I did enjoy the scene when Dawn (when infected by the potions) sets her eyes on the first thing she sees ๐Ÿ˜› . This is an animation I enjoyed in the beginning and despised at the end. I would not recommend this. Enjoy ๐Ÿ˜›

I give this film 1.5 Stars out of 5!

Baby’s Day Out

Babyโ€™s Day Out (1994)

Genre: Adventure, Comedy, Crime, Family Film

A typical example of a classic 90โ€™s family movie that is surprisingly quite good ๐Ÿ™‚ . The story is very simple to follow but it is highly enjoyable for the entire family. The story is about a rich Baby Bink being taken by three kidnappers Eddie (Joe Mantegna), Norby (Joe Pantoliano) and Veeko (Brian Haley). The comedy in this film is slapstick humour but it does work ๐Ÿ™‚ . They go through hug, awkward and dangerous moments (such as jumping from buildings or climbing various scaffolds) but comes across hilariously. The baby is adorable and you want him to succeed throughout ๐Ÿ˜€ . I loved it more when the baby was just following his favourite book unintentionally rather than on purpose as the latter half of the film suggested. He has a charm that works as he avoids and makes his kidnappers struggle to catch him ๐Ÿ™‚ . As much as I loved the slapstick and 90โ€™s humour the โ€œattacksโ€ can get a little uncomfortable to watch, but as long as you donโ€™t take this film too serious then it is enjoyable. I personally loved the ending scene as it was very funny and I would not have minded a sequel from that hint ๐Ÿ˜› . Each of the problems are funny to see and the overall cuteness makes this movie highly entertaining and surprisingly captivating ๐Ÿ˜€ . A great family movie for all and I do recommend watching this movie at least once ๐Ÿ™‚ . Enjoy ๐Ÿ˜€

I give this film 4 Stars out of 5!

Despicable Me 3

Despicable Me 3 (2017)

Genre: Animation, Action, Adventure, Family Film

Another film from the Despicable Me franchise but this one is following Gru (Steve Carell) and his family unlike the Minions movie. Personally, I am glad we are following this family again as these character are what made this series along with the minions (not just Minions ๐Ÿ˜› ) . However, this movie is not spectacular as it could have been. Donโ€™t get me wrong this film is alright, almost great and is definitely a brilliant family film ๐Ÿ™‚ . Letโ€™s start with the positives. I loved the villain Balthazar Bratt (Trey Parker) who played his part in this narrative great, his reason for villain worked and his 80โ€™s look was fabulous ๐Ÿ˜€ . I loved his general 80โ€™s vibe and how his weapons were 80โ€™s items like a Rubik cube ๐Ÿ™‚ . The minions were funny in the prison especially with the freedom song ๐Ÿ˜› . I also liked the addition of Dru (Steve Carell) who slotted into the โ€œfamilyโ€ well and he became more likable as the story continued ๐Ÿ™‚ . He was charming and a fresh update that the family needed for this film ๐Ÿ™‚ . There were also sweet charming moments in this movie. ย Also the final battle was alright and entertaining plus I loved the ending scene with the “5 minute head startโ€ (I wonโ€™t hint no more as I donโ€™t want to spoil ๐Ÿ˜› ). However, the storyline was not the most original and was only fairly entertaining. The minions werenโ€™t as funny as they could have been and were not in it as much I was expecting them too. Iโ€™m not sure if that was a good thing and the general storylines felt like I was watching a television series episode with its individual sub plots. Though this film is still good enough for fans of Despicable Me, children, families and I did quite enjoy it ๐Ÿ™‚ . The film is not as great as the original but I think this is better than Minions ๐Ÿ™‚ Enjoy ๐Ÿ˜€

A Series of Unfortunate Events

A Series of Unfortunate Events (2004)

Genre: Adventure, Comedy, Family Film

This film is one of my childhood favourites and can keep all ages quite entertained with its narrative ๐Ÿ™‚ ! It is based off Lemony Snicketโ€™s series of books and I canโ€™t say how true to books it was. However, that shouldnโ€™t matter as the story still comes across as compelling and captivating plus made me want to read those books ๐Ÿ™‚ . There is a nice Steam Punk feel to the filming, costumes and world that made it appealing, unique and different. The children were great in this Violet (Emily Browning), Klaus (Liam Aiken), and adorable Sunny (by Kara and Shelby Hoffman) as they made you certainly feel for them. Jim Carrey was fantastic as Count Olaf ๐Ÿ˜€ . His facial expressions were fabulous, his overall persona was captivating and hilarious plus makes a very entertaining villain. I liked the events and how they progressed through the film. It felt like I was watching a far longer film than it was and I really did want to keep seeing more adventures ๐Ÿ˜› . The โ€œeventsโ€ were very good and action filled. The car event and hurricane were the most captivating and entertaining scenes. It also loved the moments of sweetness and sadness from the children and I loved the end scene ๐Ÿ™‚ . ย There is also a great cast of side characters such as Timothy Spall, Catherine Oโ€™Hara and Meryl Streep. My favourite was Billy Connolly as Uncle Monty ๐Ÿ™‚ . The addition of the writer narrator played by Jude Law really worked and I loved that they kept tricking throughout (making you think it will end one way but didnโ€™t ๐Ÿ˜› ). Overall, this is a great family film that has a strong story and acting that can keep all entertained throughout. If you have not already seen this then I recommend you do at least once ๐Ÿ˜€ Enjoy ๐Ÿ™‚

I give this film 5 Stars out of 5!

Justin and the Knights of Valour

Justin and the Knights of Valour (2013)

Genre: Animation, Adventure, Family Film

This was a surprisingly great movie that I enjoyed throughout ๐Ÿ™‚ . It has a simplistic storyline (a boy on his quest to become a Knight) but it also has very good moments that made it more unique. I loved that the film set up the world well within the first five minutes without over boring. I also enjoyed the hints to the bad guys and as we learnt more, I understood why they were โ€œfighting backโ€ but the film still had me wanting Justin to win. A really liked the world such as the loss of the Knights, the world design and the tower with the Monks ๐Ÿ™‚ . The main characters they introduced were all quite good especially Justin (Freddie Highmore) who was likable and Talia (Saoirse Ronan) who was not annoying ๐Ÿ˜› ! However, some of the side characters, such as Melquiades (David Walliams), who came of a tad too over-the-top which did become a tad irritating. However, the overall characters were good and the development of the story kept you captivated and intrigued throughout ๐Ÿ™‚ . The animation was also great, I liked the song near the beginning โ€œHeroesโ€ and the last battle scene was pretty good. Also, I liked the small magic elements, the character connections to each other and overall was very enjoyable. A really great film with a pretty good concept of a story that is entertaining ๐Ÿ˜€ . Great for the entire family and I think I would recommend this little gem ๐Ÿ™‚ . Enjoy ๐Ÿ˜€

The Smurfs 2

The Smurfs 2 (2013)

Genre: Animation, Adventure, Comedy, Family Film

So this sequel is as bad as the original movie and makes the first seem better than it actually was. We have in this sequel, characters that we got familiar with in the first movie and a few new ones ๐Ÿ™‚ . The new characters that were good were Vanity Smurf (John Oliver) who was kind of funny, Vexy (Christina Ricci) who was probably the best addition in this and the step- father who added humour when he was โ€œtransformedโ€ ๐Ÿ˜€ . However, the new addition of the other โ€œnaughtyโ€ was too stupid that he became irritating and cringe worthy. The human side of the story was too cheesy for words and struggled to captivate ๐Ÿ˜› . Though to be fair, there was one sweet moment between Patrick (Neil Patrick Harris) and Victor (Brendan Gleeson) when he learnt the truth. Otherwise it was overacting from all human characters especially Gargamel (Hank Azaria) who was that stereotypical, cheesy, bad guy. He was so over-the-top you donโ€™t laugh at any of his jokes or comedy. The graphics of the Smurfs themselves was great as usual and deciding to make this all about Smurfette (Katy Perry) was a good idea ๐Ÿ˜€ . I liked that they used an original storyline here for her and explored the idea of turning her โ€œbadโ€. However, I wished it had focused more on that rather than passing over it and being too childish instead. Plus, there was a major inconsistencies with the turning into a Smurf. I will try not to spoil but if Smurfette when changing got blonde…then why did no-one else change? Overall, this film is as poor as the first and probably only small children will like this ๐Ÿ™‚ . Enjoy ๐Ÿ˜€

Rio 2

Genre: Animation, Adventure, Comedy, Family Film

This is a pretty decent sequel to the original Rio movie and is as good as the first ๐Ÿ™‚ . The colours of this movie are very bright and the music is okay although not very memorable. The original cast is back which is good to see though some arenโ€™t focussed on as much because we have new characters to get used to. The narrative is fine and is easy enough to follow ๐Ÿ™‚ . However, I do miss elements from the original story and some parts arenโ€™t very good. The moments where Blu (Jesse Eisenberg) is made to look like a fool just became annoying because I like Blu more than the new characters. This also put a strain on the relationship between Blu and Jewel (Anne Hathaway) which was not great. Plus some parts of the story did have some clichรฉ moments and the โ€œhunt for a Starโ€ sub plot was really pointless but I guess it is there for comedy reasons. However, on the up-side the relationship between Nigel (Jemaine Clement) and Gabi (Kristin Chenoweth) was great ๐Ÿ˜€ . Gabi is fabulous and her song was the best part in this entire movie ๐Ÿ˜€ . If she had been in the first movie I might have enjoyed the original movie better ๐Ÿ˜› . However, it does end sweetly and the โ€œclimaxโ€ of the story is captivating enough for you to leave the movie feeling good ๐Ÿ™‚ . Rio 2 is a decent sequel and is worth a watch if you love the original movie and is great for the entire family especially children. Enjoy ๐Ÿ˜€

Rio

Rio (2011)

Genre: Animation, Adventure, Comedy, Family Film

This pleasant enough narrative aims to keep the whole family entertained but mostly the children ๐Ÿ™‚ . The story is easy to follow but enough to keep you captivated with a decent enough amount of humour ๐Ÿ˜€ . It has lovely sweetness and a decent villain to battle against even if the ending is quite predicable ๐Ÿ˜› . The scenery of this animation is pretty impressive and the colour scheme is great. It definitely makes you think of Rio and the music in this film is awesome ๐Ÿ™‚ ! The characters are all good and likable (some more than others) but overall they all complement the narrative. The beginning scene and how Blu (voiced by Jesse Eisenberg) was captured was great. There were moments in this movie that does try to shock (danger element for the characters ๐Ÿ˜› ). The villain Nigel (Jemaine Clement) was cool and he meets a pretty nasty end but fitting ๐Ÿ˜› ! The humans of this story were also good and it was nice to see two separate storyline running at the same time ๐Ÿ™‚ . I wanted the birds to succeed as such as I wanted the humans to find them. As much as I enjoyed this movie and could sit through the entire of it without being bored, it is not really that captivating. This movie aims too much for the children that it may grate a little for the adults. Overall though, it is still a wonderful film for the entire family if you overlook the predictability ๐Ÿ™‚ . Enjoy ๐Ÿ˜€

I give this film 3.5 Stars out of 5!

Beauty and the Beast

Beauty and the Beast (2017)

Genre: Family Film, Fantasy, Musical, Disney

I have been very excited to see this new real life version of the classic Disney animation from 1991 and I know I was not the only one ๐Ÿ™‚ ! The film did not disappoint ๐Ÿ˜€ ! The story stays mostly honest to the original story which I truly enjoyed and appreciated the nostalgic feeling you get (if you loved the first film ๐Ÿ˜› ). The songs were great, they were pleasant to hear (even if you think the original songs were better ๐Ÿ˜› ) and I loved the new additions which I assume are from the musical. My favourite song version in this movie was โ€œEvermoreโ€ sang by Dan Stevens ๐Ÿ™‚ . The costumes and set looked appealing, โ€œDisneyโ€ and I loved that it has attempted to look traditional 18th century France! I think it did a great job with the period setting, with the dress sense of the all the characters (maybe not Belles ๐Ÿ˜› ) and the CGI on the Beast and objects were great. The film began great and ends wonderfully. The cast is epic (Emma Watson, Dan Stevens, Luke Evans and Josh Gad to name a few) and all performed fabulous in this film ๐Ÿ˜€ . What I also loved about this movie was as much I as appreciate the director staying true the original, they still showed new stuff such as more in depth backgrounds. We learnt more about Belle, Beast and what would have happened to the servants at the Beastโ€™s castle. I loved the relationship between Gaston and LeFou plus the development of LeFou was great ๐Ÿ™‚ . His line in the mob songs was very cool. Overall, a really good real life animation that any fan of the original will enjoy and it is great for the entire family ๐Ÿ™‚ . Enjoy ๐Ÿ˜€

I give this film 5 Stars out of 5!
