Murder on the Orient Express

Murder on the Orient Express (2017)

Genre: Crime, Drama, Mystery

I have always been a fan of an Agatha Christie Murder Mystery and I was very excited to see this movie adaptation πŸ™‚ . The cast is absolutely amazing in this with the likes of Kenneth Branagh, PenΓ©lope Cruz, Johnny Depp and Judi Dench creating excellent characters to the screen πŸ˜€ . The setting was great especially the look of the train and the costumes were good. I liked the scene with the train getting stuck in the snow and the level of drama in this movie was high πŸ™‚ . The flow ran well and the story was entertaining and captivating (though we might as well give that credit to Agatha Christie’s Novel πŸ˜› ). I did enjoy the plot twist and the connections we learnt about the death of someone in the past (would say who but that would spoil the story πŸ˜› ). I did really enjoy this movie but I was not wowed by this either. This felt like any other murder mystery show that I could watch on a lazy Sunday evening. Nothing specially different from this film except for its huge amount of major stars (which is probably its element that will make people watch this πŸ˜› ). Also, I am a little biased about Poirot because as much as Kenneth Branagh tried (and did fairly well) I still only see David Suchet as Poirot. That huge moustache was a little distracting (not in a good way πŸ˜› ) but I did get over it fairly quickly and was not bored. Overall, this is a great movie for those who love Agatha Christie movies and don’t mind seeing a new remake. This is not the best I have ever seen but worth a watch πŸ™‚ . Enjoy πŸ˜€

I give this film 3.5 Stars out of 5!

Death Note

Death Note (2017)

Genre: Adventure, Crime, Drama

Well first things first, if you were a fan or loved the Manga or anime than you aren’t going to like this movie. It’s not terrible but it is no match or worth comparison to the original series. However, I will try to review it as something different (as I may be biased as I did like the original series πŸ˜› ) as it is not Japanese, the characters names changed (Turner instead of Yagami) and is set in America. It’s alright and the graphics (especially on Ryuk) is great πŸ˜€ . When Light first uses of the book; that is the most entertaining section along with the Ferris wheel was really different (from series) and cool πŸ™‚ . Light Turner (Nat Wolff) was alright (I really loved his scream reaction from Ryuk as that was funny πŸ˜› ) but it was strange. You try to watch it without thinking of the series but it is hard as they kept the premise, Shinigami’s, character names and roles yet they changed it too. The character I disliked the most was L (Lakeith Stanfield). He was so annoying and so dislikeable in how he β€œtried to be a smart detective” that I really wanted Light to win. The main problem of this movie is that the pace is really fast which does not work in favour of the narrative. It was so rushed that I don’t think we were given enough chance to care for the characters (especially the ones we were supposed too πŸ˜› ). However, saying that, the new sections make this film good and it’s not the worst thing I have ever seen πŸ˜› . The deaths were gruesome, the show watchable and overall alright to watch πŸ™‚ . I would not recommend if you loved the original series but if you have never known of Death Note before then it’s alright πŸ˜› . Enjoy πŸ˜€

The Green Mile

The Green Mile (1999)

Genre: Crime, Drama, Fantasy

This is a film that everyone needs to watch at least once in their lifetime and it is a classic πŸ˜€ . Its storyline is compelling, gripping and entertaining from start to finish plus mixes realism with magic perfectly πŸ™‚ . The story is dark (it is following the lives of death row guards) and does have some uncomfortable moments but it feels right for the atmosphere of the movie. I loved that the excellent performances from all the actors lead by Tom Hanks (Paul Edgecomb) and Michael Clarke Duncan (John Coffey) helped created so many different characters. I believed each character (some made me love them and some made me hate them πŸ˜› ) and each felt useful to the narrative. I loved the character of Eduard Delacroix (Michael Jeter) who was lovable and funny even if he was a death row inmate plus his exit scene is a shocker. The filming is clean and crisp plus the CGI on the β€œmagic” still works for this movie πŸ™‚ . John Coffey was an extremely likable and unique character and Paul Edgecomb (performed fabulously by Tom Hanks) was a main character you wanted to follow πŸ™‚ . Percy Wetmore was a perfectly horrid character who I believed (and hated πŸ˜› ) and Doug Hutchison performed him brilliantly. The movie also ends great as it leaves you questioning the experience Edgecomb saw while accepting a perfect end to a memorising movie. It is beautifully filmed, has a fantastic storyline with solid acting πŸ˜€ . This is a long movie (over 3 hours) but you really don’t notice πŸ˜› . I definitely recommend this movie if you like Stephen King book adaptations (as this is one) or Crime with a touch of Fantasy πŸ™‚ . Enjoy πŸ˜€

Baby’s Day Out

Baby’s Day Out (1994)

Genre: Adventure, Comedy, Crime, Family Film

A typical example of a classic 90’s family movie that is surprisingly quite good πŸ™‚ . The story is very simple to follow but it is highly enjoyable for the entire family. The story is about a rich Baby Bink being taken by three kidnappers Eddie (Joe Mantegna), Norby (Joe Pantoliano) and Veeko (Brian Haley). The comedy in this film is slapstick humour but it does work πŸ™‚ . They go through hug, awkward and dangerous moments (such as jumping from buildings or climbing various scaffolds) but comes across hilariously. The baby is adorable and you want him to succeed throughout πŸ˜€ . I loved it more when the baby was just following his favourite book unintentionally rather than on purpose as the latter half of the film suggested. He has a charm that works as he avoids and makes his kidnappers struggle to catch him πŸ™‚ . As much as I loved the slapstick and 90’s humour the β€œattacks” can get a little uncomfortable to watch, but as long as you don’t take this film too serious then it is enjoyable. I personally loved the ending scene as it was very funny and I would not have minded a sequel from that hint πŸ˜› . Each of the problems are funny to see and the overall cuteness makes this movie highly entertaining and surprisingly captivating πŸ˜€ . A great family movie for all and I do recommend watching this movie at least once πŸ™‚ . Enjoy πŸ˜€

Don’t Breathe

Don’t Breathe (2016)

Genre: Crime, Horror, Thriller

This is one of the most unique and truly enjoyable horror movies I have seen in a long time πŸ™‚ . The twist is (mostly told in trailers, other reviews and blurbs of the film so watch out πŸ˜› ) amazing and kept me hooked throughout. The main three characters Rocky (Jane Levy), Alex (Dylan Minnette) and Money (Daniel Zovatto) are not likable characters especially Money. They (Rocky and Alex) are given reasons for their bad behaviour but you aren’t supposed to like them initially. However, when the robbing of the wrong house begins everything changed! I loved the constant shocks and surprises from The Blind Man (Stephen Lang) were brilliant πŸ™‚ . He was intense and terrifying plus the more we got to know him the more I felt for the teenagers. The fight scenes were great and the fear, nail-biting, edge of your seat moments were great πŸ™‚ . I loved the scene where the survivors are running from the cellar in the dark πŸ˜€ . I loved the danger element within that scene and loved that they must have actually filmed in the dark as their pupils were dilated. The main thing that is great in this movie was the facial expressions and body language of the characters especially Rocky and The Blind Man. She showed her fear and anguish through her facial expressions which had you hooked πŸ˜€ ! Plus Stephen Lang’s portrayal showed vulnerability, sadness, and anger which made him an intense character I have seen from a horror film for a long while πŸ™‚ . I also loved the ending which allows a promise of a sequel and if not, left it with a great feeling πŸ™‚ . A feeling that neither one of the characters are as good as the other leaving you questioning who truly is the victim? A great horror / thriller film that is very unique, great for horror fans and will leave you wanting more πŸ˜› . Enjoy πŸ˜€

Jack Reacher: Never Go Back

Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (2016)

Genre: Action, Adventure, Crime

This is the sequel to the first Jack Reacher film and the best thing I can say about this movie is that it is okay. It is obviously not exactly like the books (just like the first film) but it does keep you fairly engaged and does what an action movie should πŸ™‚ . There are enough fights and explosions to keep the action fans happy. Tom Cruise is great as Jack Reacher again and I think I prefer his portrayal in this rather than in the first movie πŸ˜€ . The storyline which forces him to be β€œinvolved” in the case works and his relationship with Turner (Cobie Smulders) was good. I really liked that the director did not force a standard, typical or expected relationship between these two and allowed Cobie Smulders to portray a strong woman in this movie πŸ˜€ . I also enjoyed the possibility of Jack Reacher being a father and Danika Yarosh who plays Samantha was really good (came across as not annoying πŸ˜› ). My favourite scenes in this movie were the run in the airport and when the truth of whether Reacher is a father is revealed (near the end in the cafΓ©) πŸ™‚ . However, I can’t say I was entertained throughout and everything was just okay. Not very memorable and it became rather predicable (set up, bad guys chase, fight scenes, protect the girl and so on πŸ˜› ). The storyline of trying to solve the undercover crime was a little messy and dull so I was not really bothered. I can’t say if this was better than the original or not but I think it was a passable and enjoyable enough action movie to sit through even if not the most entertaining πŸ˜› . Good enough for the Jack Reacher fans if you are desperate to watch the sequel πŸ™‚ . Enjoy πŸ˜€

I give this film 3 Stars out of 5!

Fast & Furious 7

Fast & Furious 7 (2015)

Genre: Action, Crime, Thriller

I can’t say I am the biggest fan of the Fast and Furious franchise as I have only seen around about 2 of these movies. However, saying that I know enough to able to watch this movie πŸ™‚ . It is quite entertaining and captivating enough to keep you watching from beginning to the end. There are plenty of big action scenes in this that are pretty impressive πŸ™‚ . Such as the driving the car through buildings or sky diving with the cars πŸ˜› . Also the fight scenes with the villain Deckard Shaw ( Jason Stratham) were really cool. He made an impressive and deadly opponent plus the hospital scene at the beginning was a cool introduction to the character. I also really loved Paul Walker’s character and his scenes in this such as his “Jump from Coach on Cliff” and “slamming door shut to protect child” were great πŸ˜€ ! However, the overall awesomeness was not carried over entirely and some moments struggle to deliver. Of course we have the bikini’s, fast cars, bums on show and the occasional “sexy” car wash but that is expected with the franchise πŸ˜› . There was a weak fighting scene with Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) and the female guards. It was not very impressive and looked weak compared to the men fights in the movie. If you took this scene out I don’t think the movie would be affected at all. Even the character of Letty and the other female characters weren’t that good. She came off a little bit boring even with her amnesia storyline and no other female character was memorable. Though, some of men were not good either such as Roman (Tyrese Gibson), who at times became irritating to hear his over-the-top jokes. This is not to say it’s a terrible movie because I did enjoy watching and the ending was good πŸ™‚ . I think you have to watch all the other films first to appreciate this movie as for me I felt at a disadvantage. The storyline was good, villain impressive, the action scenes great and a fitting movie in dedication to Paul Walker πŸ™‚ . A must see for those who love franchise and a decent movie for those who don’t πŸ˜› . Enjoy πŸ™‚

Ghost in a Shell

Ghost in the Shell (2017)

Genre: Action, Crime, Drama, Sci-Fi

This film adaption of the original Japanese Manga is exactly as I imagined it would be and more πŸ˜€ ! I have never watched or read the original 90’s Manga (or Anime) Β so I am unsure how true it was but I was so captivated that I did not mind πŸ˜› . The world’s set up is original, bright, well crafted and (kind of) believable. It looked like a realistic future and with that small introduction at the beginning, you believe that those characters actually β€œlive” there. Even though this is clearly a dystopian world it didn’t feel depressive which helped make this film enjoyable πŸ™‚ . Not only was the world set up great (making me want to learn more πŸ˜› ), the music and characters were also crafted well. The CGI and design of Major’s robotic body was great. Also everyone else’s CGI for the robotic parts did not seem fake (which is obviously a good thing πŸ˜› ). I loved all the characters but my favourites were Batou (Pilou AsbΓ¦k), Kuze (Michael Pitt) and Scarlett Johansson as Major stole the show πŸ˜€ ! The fight scenes are plentiful, the chase scenes are good and parts are a bit scary / freaky (like the Geisha Robots πŸ˜› ) . There are nice shocking moments and twists that should have been predicable but were great instead πŸ™‚ . I loved that twist and I loved when we start learning more about Major’s past ( I can’t say which part in the movie as I don’t want to spoil πŸ˜› ). The pace flowed well and I would have liked to watch more of this film. A great Sci-fi that kept me entertained throughout and I would happily watch again πŸ™‚ . I definitely recommend whether you were a fan of the original or not πŸ˜› . Enjoy πŸ™‚

Mechanic: Resurrection

Mechanic: Resurrection (2016)

Genre: Action, Adventure, Crime

The Mechanic sequel is alright but I think fans of the original movie would be disappointed. It is a simple storyline that is overused and expected if you looking for anything in the action genre category. To be fair, I did not think it was as bad many others have said in their reviews of this film. I actually was entertained and enjoyed the section when Arthur Bishop (Jason Statham) was taking out the bad guys πŸ™‚ . My favourite one was the β€œswimming pool” incident πŸ˜€ . The mission was great but the storyline did have problems. For example, I was not sure why the main character gave up his β€œsafety” to protect a pretty girl Gina (Jessica Alba) who he met two days ago πŸ˜› . Plus the ending when Bishop is getting the upper hand against the villain Crain (Sam Hazeldine) got a little messy as a storyline. The scenery is good and the action is plentiful. I haven’t watched the original movie so I am not sure how faithful to the story and characters this sequel was. However, if you looking for a simple action flick with an alight storyline with a mix of predictability then this is for you πŸ™‚ . Though if you loved the original then maybe give this one a miss πŸ˜› . Enjoy πŸ˜€
