ParaNorman

ParaNorman (2012)

Genre: Animation, Adventure, Comedy

This is a movie about a strange boy who has to save his town when zombies appear. You can probably guess how this movie will end but if you prepare for predictability, you will be surprised ๐Ÿ˜› . The narrative was entertaining, captivating enough to keep you watching and was clever as it revealed more about the witch ๐Ÿ™‚ . I loved the beginning section of this film as it threw us into the story while introducing Normanโ€™s gift. The humour is a good and consistent level throughout. The stop motion CGI was executed well and made it appealing to watch ๐Ÿ™‚ . What I really liked about this movie was that its script (narrative) was appealing to both children who itโ€™s aimed for and adults. The comedy in this film takes away any scariness (though it is a childrenโ€™s movie so I wasnโ€™t expecting any ๐Ÿ˜› ). The twist with who the witch is was a nice touch and made you change your opinions of characters as the film continued. I liked the zombies and how the town becomes taken over (trying not to spoil ๐Ÿ˜› ) and my favourite comedy element was the vending machine moments ๐Ÿ˜€ . Norman (Kodi Smit-McPhee) was a good character to follow as he was likable even if a little weird. The pace of the movie ran smoothly which helps to keep you captivated from beginning to end ๐Ÿ™‚ . Plus any fan of horror may see some references or chuckle at the jokes about the genre in this film. This is a surprisingly great family film that is suitable for all ages and I definitely recommend ๐Ÿ™‚ . Enjoy ๐Ÿ˜€

I give this film 4 Stars out of 5!

Mr. Peabody & Sherman

Mr. Peabody & Sherman (2014)

Genre: Animation, Adventure, Comedy

I had not seen the retro cartoon series about Mr. Peabody & Sherman so I am unsure whether this has stayed loyal to the original or has offended original fans. However, for me I found this a very entertaining movie that had me captivated from beginning to the end ๐Ÿ™‚ . The characters they introduced were all likeable; Mr. Peabody (Ty Burrell), Sherman (Max Charles) and Penny (Ariel Winter). The animation was also very good ๐Ÿ˜€ . I really enjoyed the storyline as it was well thought-out with plenty of humour as well as some issues suitable for children. The comedy made me laugh but I did appreciate the rift between the characters. We saw how Sherman struggled at school at the beginning and how he clashes with his dad as the movie continues (you will see when you watch it ๐Ÿ˜› ). I liked the characters we met through history as it made playful jokes but was smart with storyline to not be too ridiculous ๐Ÿ˜› . This is a rather unique story that can be seen as predicable but I donโ€™t think so. It is aimed for the family and I think both children and adults can be entertained by this movie from Dreamworks ๐Ÿ™‚ . I also found Odysseusโ€™ reaction to a certain character at the end was very funny (wonโ€™t say which character as that would spoil ๐Ÿ˜› ). Overall, this is a great movie that I would happily watch again and would recommend ๐Ÿ˜€ . Enjoy ๐Ÿ™‚

The Guardian Brothers

The Guardian Brothers (2016)

Genre: Animation, Family Film

I was unsure what to expect from this animation that had originally been created and shown in China first. You do notice at times, especially Raindrop (Bella Thorne), her animation does not match up with her now English voice over which I tried to not to judge on (but it did become a tad irritable ๐Ÿ˜› ). Also, I found the animated dogs a little distracting as they acted too โ€œcartoonyโ€ compared to the world of the film. Apart from that, I liked this movie ๐Ÿ™‚ . I really liked the animation on everything else and the world of the Spirits ๐Ÿ˜€ ! It was very colourful, each character was different, the rules made clear to me and I really liked their designs ๐Ÿ™‚ . Bloom (Cristina Pucelli) was a very pretty design while Shen Tu (Dan Fogler) and Yu Lei (Edward Norton) had gold versions. The narrative itself is easy to follow but got more captivating as the film continued. I liked the set up as it explained the situation and made me understand why certain characters did as they did. The climatic threat was good, the daemon I liked (wonโ€™t say any more as I donโ€™t want to spoil ๐Ÿ˜› ) and the ending was sweet. I liked that we had two stories running along each other, one the soup shop and the other breaking the seals. I know there are many bad reviews on this as they found the dubbing a struggle. I do agree on the count of Raindrop as she sounded far too grown up for me to bear. And they never answer what happened to Bloom (when you watch you will see what I mean ๐Ÿ˜› )? However, as I continued and watched the story (rather than focus on the voicing) I found I enjoyed it but this maybe a marmite thing ๐Ÿ˜› . Plus who knows, the original (in Chinese) may have been better ๐Ÿ˜› . I say give this film a try if you like animation with a decent story concept, but I have to admit it is not the best in the world. Enjoy ๐Ÿ™‚

Strange Magic

Strange Magic (2015)

Genre: Animation, Adventure, Comedy, Family Film

I am a fan of animated films about romance and fantasy plus at times I donโ€™t mind cheesy films ๐Ÿ˜› . This started really good and had me quite captivated with its introduction. I liked the idea of the two sides (one good and one bad) and the animation was great ๐Ÿ™‚ . The CGI was fabulous and the look of the creatures was fantastic ๐Ÿ˜€ . My favourite creature was the Imp who was adorable and his reason for being in this film was worth it. I also loved the image of the fairies and their colours and I did appreciate the Bog King (Alan Cumming) not being pretty ๐Ÿ˜› . The story is very predictable from the beginning the story starts but I was willing to forgive this. However, by the time the story hit half way (about the time Marianne (Evan Rachel Wood) went to find her sister on her own) the story got gradually worse. The cheesiness became unbearable as it continued (and I was trying to stomach as much as I could) with no surprises in this narrative. The romance was fine but I preferred Dawnโ€™s (Meredith Anne Bull) and Sunnyโ€™s (Elijah Kelly) rather than the possibility of the main charactersโ€™. I found their โ€œromanceโ€ ridiculously too quick (it was barely a few hours maybe less) for True Love ๐Ÿ˜› . The songs are good and catchy (plus modern) but I found this film was over reliant on them. However, I did enjoy the scene when Dawn (when infected by the potions) sets her eyes on the first thing she sees ๐Ÿ˜› . This is an animation I enjoyed in the beginning and despised at the end. I would not recommend this. Enjoy ๐Ÿ˜›

I give this film 1.5 Stars out of 5!

Aladdin

Aladdin (1992)

Genre: Animation, Adventure, Comedy, Disney

This is one of those Disney Classics that the entire family can enjoy ๐Ÿ˜€ . The story is highly entertaining and is adventure filled keeping both adults and children captivated. The narrative is simple to follow but it has danger elements such as the โ€œpalace in the snowโ€ or the โ€œescaping the caveโ€ to stop it from becoming boring. Aladdin is a very sympathetic character who has a sweet and charming element about him that makes you want him to succeed ๐Ÿ™‚ . Princess Jasmine is a very good love interest and her reasons in the film are totally understandable. The villain Jafar is very impressive and I loved his constant trickery throughout ๐Ÿ˜€ !! The humour is as strong as the adventure in this. The animal characters (Abu and Iago) are great but itโ€™s the Genie who makes this ๐Ÿ™‚ ! He is voiced by the late but great Robin Williams whose adlibs are so unique you canโ€™t help but be entertained ๐Ÿ˜€ . Some of the joke references may be dated (as this was for a 90โ€™s audience originally ๐Ÿ˜› ) but they arenโ€™t terrible so the quality of the movie is not affected. The songs in this such as a Friend like Me, A Whole New World and Prince Ali are all amazing ๐Ÿ˜€ ! I think overall this entire film is exactly what you expect and want from a Disney Animated Classic. I enjoyed this film as a child and I can still love this film many years later ๐Ÿ™‚ . I personally loved the beginning with the hint of dark tones, mystery, adventure and of course magic ๐Ÿ˜› ! This film has something for everyone and will be a big hit anyone. If you havenโ€™t seen this yet you need to and it is perfect for fans of Disney that caters for boys and girls ๐Ÿ™‚ . Enjoy ๐Ÿ˜€

Despicable Me 3

Despicable Me 3 (2017)

Genre: Animation, Action, Adventure, Family Film

Another film from the Despicable Me franchise but this one is following Gru (Steve Carell) and his family unlike the Minions movie. Personally, I am glad we are following this family again as these character are what made this series along with the minions (not just Minions ๐Ÿ˜› ) . However, this movie is not spectacular as it could have been. Donโ€™t get me wrong this film is alright, almost great and is definitely a brilliant family film ๐Ÿ™‚ . Letโ€™s start with the positives. I loved the villain Balthazar Bratt (Trey Parker) who played his part in this narrative great, his reason for villain worked and his 80โ€™s look was fabulous ๐Ÿ˜€ . I loved his general 80โ€™s vibe and how his weapons were 80โ€™s items like a Rubik cube ๐Ÿ™‚ . The minions were funny in the prison especially with the freedom song ๐Ÿ˜› . I also liked the addition of Dru (Steve Carell) who slotted into the โ€œfamilyโ€ well and he became more likable as the story continued ๐Ÿ™‚ . He was charming and a fresh update that the family needed for this film ๐Ÿ™‚ . There were also sweet charming moments in this movie. ย Also the final battle was alright and entertaining plus I loved the ending scene with the “5 minute head startโ€ (I wonโ€™t hint no more as I donโ€™t want to spoil ๐Ÿ˜› ). However, the storyline was not the most original and was only fairly entertaining. The minions werenโ€™t as funny as they could have been and were not in it as much I was expecting them too. Iโ€™m not sure if that was a good thing and the general storylines felt like I was watching a television series episode with its individual sub plots. Though this film is still good enough for fans of Despicable Me, children, families and I did quite enjoy it ๐Ÿ™‚ . The film is not as great as the original but I think this is better than Minions ๐Ÿ™‚ Enjoy ๐Ÿ˜€

Justin and the Knights of Valour

Justin and the Knights of Valour (2013)

Genre: Animation, Adventure, Family Film

This was a surprisingly great movie that I enjoyed throughout ๐Ÿ™‚ . It has a simplistic storyline (a boy on his quest to become a Knight) but it also has very good moments that made it more unique. I loved that the film set up the world well within the first five minutes without over boring. I also enjoyed the hints to the bad guys and as we learnt more, I understood why they were โ€œfighting backโ€ but the film still had me wanting Justin to win. A really liked the world such as the loss of the Knights, the world design and the tower with the Monks ๐Ÿ™‚ . The main characters they introduced were all quite good especially Justin (Freddie Highmore) who was likable and Talia (Saoirse Ronan) who was not annoying ๐Ÿ˜› ! However, some of the side characters, such as Melquiades (David Walliams), who came of a tad too over-the-top which did become a tad irritating. However, the overall characters were good and the development of the story kept you captivated and intrigued throughout ๐Ÿ™‚ . The animation was also great, I liked the song near the beginning โ€œHeroesโ€ and the last battle scene was pretty good. Also, I liked the small magic elements, the character connections to each other and overall was very enjoyable. A really great film with a pretty good concept of a story that is entertaining ๐Ÿ˜€ . Great for the entire family and I think I would recommend this little gem ๐Ÿ™‚ . Enjoy ๐Ÿ˜€

The Smurfs 2

The Smurfs 2 (2013)

Genre: Animation, Adventure, Comedy, Family Film

So this sequel is as bad as the original movie and makes the first seem better than it actually was. We have in this sequel, characters that we got familiar with in the first movie and a few new ones ๐Ÿ™‚ . The new characters that were good were Vanity Smurf (John Oliver) who was kind of funny, Vexy (Christina Ricci) who was probably the best addition in this and the step- father who added humour when he was โ€œtransformedโ€ ๐Ÿ˜€ . However, the new addition of the other โ€œnaughtyโ€ was too stupid that he became irritating and cringe worthy. The human side of the story was too cheesy for words and struggled to captivate ๐Ÿ˜› . Though to be fair, there was one sweet moment between Patrick (Neil Patrick Harris) and Victor (Brendan Gleeson) when he learnt the truth. Otherwise it was overacting from all human characters especially Gargamel (Hank Azaria) who was that stereotypical, cheesy, bad guy. He was so over-the-top you donโ€™t laugh at any of his jokes or comedy. The graphics of the Smurfs themselves was great as usual and deciding to make this all about Smurfette (Katy Perry) was a good idea ๐Ÿ˜€ . I liked that they used an original storyline here for her and explored the idea of turning her โ€œbadโ€. However, I wished it had focused more on that rather than passing over it and being too childish instead. Plus, there was a major inconsistencies with the turning into a Smurf. I will try not to spoil but if Smurfette when changing got blonde…then why did no-one else change? Overall, this film is as poor as the first and probably only small children will like this ๐Ÿ™‚ . Enjoy ๐Ÿ˜€

The Smurfs

The Smurfs (2011)

Genre: Animation, Adventure, Comedy, Children

Whether good or bad you will be compelled to watch this movie at least once if you ever loved the Smurfs as a child ๐Ÿ˜› . Overall, this is an amazing movie for children that will have them laughing and enjoying throughout ๐Ÿ˜€ . It is a little too childish and tries too hard to be funny for the adults to enjoy this but it is not too offensive to watch as a family. Though, the storyline was easy enough (plain and simple ๐Ÿ™‚ ) to follow and to keep you watching until the end. The CGI is alright and the cast in this are pretty good (Neil Patrick Harris, Katy Perry, Jayma Mays plus many more ๐Ÿ™‚ ). There is also some modern references that you will note which can be funny and the slapstick humour is okay. The major problem with this movie is that nothing is truly memorable and you donโ€™t really connect with the human characters or the Smurfs. Plus this movie might not keep you captivated throughout if you are older than a certain age. However, saying this it is a movie about Smurfs and it does what it says on the tin ๐Ÿ˜› . Overall, this is a really pleasant and traditional childrenโ€™s movie that is just about escaping a villain and returning home ๐Ÿ™‚ . If you go and watch this with little expectations than you might enjoy this and feel quite nostalgic for the original Smurfs ๐Ÿ™‚ . Enjoy ๐Ÿ˜€

I give this film 2.5 Stars out of 5!
