Strange Magic

Strange Magic (2015)

Genre: Animation, Adventure, Comedy, Family Film

I am a fan of animated films about romance and fantasy plus at times I don’t mind cheesy films 😛 . This started really good and had me quite captivated with its introduction. I liked the idea of the two sides (one good and one bad) and the animation was great 🙂 . The CGI was fabulous and the look of the creatures was fantastic 😀 . My favourite creature was the Imp who was adorable and his reason for being in this film was worth it. I also loved the image of the fairies and their colours and I did appreciate the Bog King (Alan Cumming) not being pretty 😛 . The story is very predictable from the beginning the story starts but I was willing to forgive this. However, by the time the story hit half way (about the time Marianne (Evan Rachel Wood) went to find her sister on her own) the story got gradually worse. The cheesiness became unbearable as it continued (and I was trying to stomach as much as I could) with no surprises in this narrative. The romance was fine but I preferred Dawn’s (Meredith Anne Bull) and Sunny’s (Elijah Kelly) rather than the possibility of the main characters’. I found their “romance” ridiculously too quick (it was barely a few hours maybe less) for True Love 😛 . The songs are good and catchy (plus modern) but I found this film was over reliant on them. However, I did enjoy the scene when Dawn (when infected by the potions) sets her eyes on the first thing she sees 😛 . This is an animation I enjoyed in the beginning and despised at the end. I would not recommend this. Enjoy 😛

I give this film 1.5 Stars out of 5!

Flatliners

Flatliners (2017)

Genre: Drama, Horror, Sci-fi

I have not seen the original movie so I cannot compare how much better or worse this reboot movie is. However, when seeing the trailer I was very excited to see this and was happily entertained throughout 🙂 . There is an amazing good cast for this film such as Ellen Page (Courtney), Diego Luna (Ray), Nina Dobrev (Marlo) and James Norton (Jamie) who all acted good 🙂 . I believed the friendship and how the team got together, plus I really enjoyed the beginning as it set up the “drama” of the story well 🙂 . The scares in this film may not give you nightmares but will definitely make you jump and I certainly jumped a few times 😛 . The graphics of the “supernatural” world was great and I was on edge when the “horror” elements appeared. The worst scary scene but my favourite had to be the “Morgue” scene 😀 . I also really enjoyed the surprise in who would die first, as that was surprising and I never could have guessed 😛 .  However, I did enjoy the first half more and the ending could have finished better. Don’t get me wrong, it ended fine and I did not have a problem but it could have had a more dramatic climax. Also my least favourite character was Sophia (Kiersey Clemons) but I understood why she was there (kind of 😛 ).  Though, I really did enjoy it and liked the attention to small details such as 9 years ago Courtney holds a flip phone but a smart phone in the present day 🙂 . I think (seeing other people’s reaction to this movie) that you aren’t going to love this movie if you’re a fan of the original. However, if you looking for a rather entertaining movie that is not too scary to watch but jumpy, then this is for you 🙂 .Enjoy 😀

I give this film 4 Stars out of 5!

Be Afraid

Be Afraid (2017)

Genre: Horror, Sci-Fi, Thriller

This is another horror and supernatural creature movie which terrorises a family who have just moved to a small town in Pennsylvania. The story itself is alright and can keep you fairly entertained throughout 🙂 .  The opening scene was very good and was my favourite part 😀 . It through us straight into the drama and has us interested to find out what was threatening the family? I liked the character and look of Nathan (Michael Leone) and his scenes with the monster 🙂 . I also loved the scene with Heather (Jaimi Paige) in the bath tub as I thought at this point, we would see more of the monsters and that the story would get more gripping. The overall acting from everyone was okay and CGI was good too 🙂 . However, the story was not the most captivating I have ever seen and was almost at the point of boredom 😛 . I did not really care about the family and the movie left too many unanswered questions. Such as why are the creatures taking people or why (won’t spoil who 😛 ) did they keep the monsters hidden from everyone else? Plus the ending was ridiculous . I mean it was confusing because at one moment we have Dr. John Chambers (Brian Krause) looking for the child then we are given an ending. The film just quickly gave us a kind of solution without an explanation. This movie had potential at the beginning but wasted it on a rubbish storyline and a terrible ending. This was not even scary 😛 . This is a film I would not recommend as it has a forgettable story and no scares. Though, it may be for you if you like not scary horrors. Enjoy 😛

Rogue

Rogue (2007)

Genre: Action, Adventure, Horror

This movie is about a group of tourists who get trapped on a small mud island right in the territory of a “rogue” crocodile. This movie does sound like one of those B-Movies that you love to sit and laugh at its impossible storylines, plot holes and terrible CGI 😛 . However, this film is definitely not one of them. I was happily surprised by its plausible narrative and it was very interesting and captivating throughout 🙂 . I loved the beginning of this movie and the newspaper clips about “monster crocodile attacks” giving us a hint of what is to come for the rest of the movie 🙂 . I liked that in the first 30 minutes of this movie, we were allowed to get to know each individual character and I did not know who would be next (or first) to be “killed” 😛 . The suspense was great and there were some surprising deaths plus dramatic tension such as the “climb across the line” scene.  I was hooked as they tried to figure a way to survive and the way they defeat it was plausible which I appreciated 🙂 . The graphics were good and I liked how the crocodile looked realistic (as much as it could be as it was a rogue crocodile 😛 ).  The scenery was also very good and I absolutely loved the end credit music of “Never Smile at a Crocodile” 😛 . I wish though, I was more interested in the main character Pete McKell (Michael Vartan) because as much as I did not hate him…I did not really like him either. Though his character is not terrible and does not affect the overall enjoyment of this movie 🙂 .  Overall, this film is surprisingly enjoyable and great for anyone who loves monster horror flicks 😀 . Enjoy 😀

I give this film 4.5 Stars out of 5!

How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days

How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003)

Genre: Comedy, Romance

This is a decent light hearted romantic comedy that is great to watch over and over again 🙂 . This has a sweet and easy to follow narrative that can keep you very entertained even if the ending may be predictable 😛 . I loved the introduction to both main characters and the set up for the two characters to meet (their reasons and idea of the whole film) was very good. Kate Hudson as Andie Anderson and Matthew McConaughey as Ben Barry were both very likable characters 🙂 . I even loved their relationship throughout this and they were quite believable when they were no longer playing (the bet wasn’t the reason the characters met).  There are plenty of humorous moments in this which will have you laughing which mostly came from Kate Hudson’s ridiculous “clingy over the top” girlfriend scenes 😀 . Personally, I loved the set and flow of the first half of the movie more. I thought it was captivating, allowed me to see the world the characters were in, their intentions, their friends and plenty of romance and comedy to boot 🙂 . However, when the climax happens (when the bet is revealed) the ending can’t match the first half. Don’t get me wrong, the scene is funny and it ties up the story well. I guess I wanted a more wow ending or perhaps it ended too quickly by the time we got to the climax. Overall, this is a great movie that is fabulous for anyone who loves a decent romantic comedy or girly chick flick 😀 . Enjoy 🙂

The Babadook

The Babadook (2014)

Genre: Drama, Horror

This is an unusual but very entertaining film that is certainly for those who prefer a horror movie focused on story than gore 🙂 . The movie starts off oddly but it is intriguing and it continues to remind us of the opening scene and allude to the car crash as the film continues. I liked and disliked the mother Amelia (Essie Davis) and child Samuel (Noah Wiseman) in this movie as we discovered more of their personalities. However, what I did like about both characters was that even in their most unlikable moments they were still understandable. However, my possible dislike did vanish as I got more gripped in the tale especially when Amelia starts to believe. The idea of isolation was great and the aunt was awful in this, plus the scene at the birthday party was good 🙂 . I loved the entrance to the Babadook and the scenes of his appearances. His story was great, the idea of the book and the “Babadook, dook, dook” was awesome 😀 . There are plenty of creepy moments in this and surprises 🙂 . I very much enjoyed how the atmosphere of dread and uneasiness never left. The twist near the end was great and I was unsure with the outcome making this film not predicable. I also very enjoyed how they “defeated” the Babadook and overall ending of the movie 🙂 . It is a nice change to find a surprisingly pleasant and happier ending to a horror movie 😛 . This is slow steady paced film with plenty of creepy scary moments that is great for those who love horrors that make you pay attention 🙂 . I definitely recommend this movie though I did not find this scary 😛 . Enjoy 😀

Kingsman: The Golden Circle

Kingsman: The Golden Circle (2017)

Genre: Action, Adventure, Comedy

The sequel to the surprisingly very successful first Kingsman movie that I could not wait to see 😀 . I can say this film is very entertaining and does please those fans of the original movie 🙂 . It’s great to see the familiar characters Eggsy (Taron Egerton), Merlin (Mark Strong) and the return of Colin Firth as Harry Hart. I really enjoyed the introduction to the American Statesman and loved that their code names where drinks such as Tequila (Channing Tatum) 🙂 . The story itself was very entertaining with its twists and surprises along the way. This film has many shocks and is not afraid to kill of some characters (even when you thought they would be safe 😛 ). I liked that it did not forget what had happened in the first film like who his girlfriend is (though you do wonder why is he dating her? 😛 ) and explaining why certain things happen. The villain Poppy (Julianne Moore) is absolutely terrifying and I do not question her power (being a difficult one to defeat). Plus I loved seeing more spy objects, spy fights and action scenes such as the ski lift 😀 . However, this film is long and the magic of the first movie could not be recreated for this sequel. I am not sure what it was that made this film lack, but as this movie continued you do feel it. Maybe it was that we had too many new characters and being in a completely different agency taking away too much familiarity. Maybe the villains defeat was very unimpressive compared to Valentine’s (Samuel L .Jackson). Though, this film has Elton John who is incredible funny in “Wednesday Night” scene 😛 . This movie is fabulous and is great for any fan of the original who wants to see more of the Kingsman and I can’t wait to see if a third movie is on the way 😀 . It is worth the watch just doesn’t have the magic of the first. Enjoy 🙂

I give this film 4.5 Stars out of 5!

Victoria and Abdul

Victoria and Abdul (2017)

Genre: Biography, Drama, History

I was very excited to see this movie from the trailers as it appeared to be a charming story about the unusual friendship between Queen Victoria (Judi Dench) and a young Indian clerk (Ali Fazal). The main two actors were great as their characters as they were believable, their friendship chemistry good and Judi Dench looked fabulous as Queen Victoria 😀 . My favourite actor in this was Eddie Izzard as Bertie the Prince of Wales who was amazing 😀 . He was very convincing as his character throughout and I liked him even at his worst (as it fitted the character’s persona). This film was quite humorous at times and my favourite moments were from Mohammed’s (Adeel Akhtar) jokes about the English food as Barbaric 😛 . The narrative was informative (as I have not heard of this story in history before), scenery and costumes were great plus I was not bored 🙂 . I liked the speech Victoria gave when threatened with “insanity” and the Ali Fazal’s performance near the end was very good 🙂 . The actual end scene was sweet which matched the pleasantness of the movie (when it had time to be 😛 ). However, part way through the movie I lost my interest as it became a little depressive and I found the more I watch, the more I questioned Abdul Karim. Like why did he lie or not tell the entire truth? Though, this is minor but did not keep me from being captivated as it could have been. This is a decent watch and worth it for anyone wanting to learn more about Queen Victoria but I can’t say I would be rushing to see this movie again 😛 . Enjoy 😀

IT

IT (2017)

Genre: Adventure, Drama, Horror

This looked fabulous from the trailers and when I finally got to see it, the film certainly did not disappoint 😛 . The narrative is amazing and captivating from the beginning to the end. The beginning scene is very good for a horror film without being over the top with the “gore”. It had a perfect balance of scariness and an intriguing storyline plus after seeing the first clip it gives you a hint of how the rest of the movie will follow. Bill Skarsgård as the clown Pennywise was fantastic 😀 !! He looked creepy and terrifying while his outfit looked amazing 🙂 . The overall visual aesthetics of the film is quite memorable especially its use of the colours such as Georgie’s yellow coat and the red balloon 🙂 . Georgie (Jackson Robert Scott) was an adorable actor in this and the overall lead children were good. I liked them all but some I preferred more such as Eddie (Jack Dylan Grazer) and Beverly (Sophia Lillis) 🙂 .Their relationships (the entire group of friends) were sweet and this made us like them more. This movie had some great scary scenes such as Pennywise in the basement (in the water) and the projector plus the graphics in this film are fantastic 🙂 . What I loved in this film was the discovery the children found as the movie continued and I never knew who would be killed next 😛 . However, the only downside I would say was that this film did not terrify me. I think I was more afraid for the characters rather than the movie being scary. This film is certainly worth the watch and I cannot wait to see what Part 2 will bring 😀 . Enjoy 🙂
