The Guardian Brothers (2016)
Genre: Animation, Family Film
I was unsure what to expect from this animation that had originally been created and shown in China first. You do notice at times, especially Raindrop (Bella Thorne), her animation does not match up with her now English voice over which I tried to not to judge on (but it did become a tad irritable 😛 ). Also, I found the animated dogs a little distracting as they acted too “cartoony” compared to the world of the film. Apart from that, I liked this movie 🙂 . I really liked the animation on everything else and the world of the Spirits 😀 ! It was very colourful, each character was different, the rules made clear to me and I really liked their designs 🙂 . Bloom (Cristina Pucelli) was a very pretty design while Shen Tu (Dan Fogler) and Yu Lei (Edward Norton) had gold versions. The narrative itself is easy to follow but got more captivating as the film continued. I liked the set up as it explained the situation and made me understand why certain characters did as they did. The climatic threat was good, the daemon I liked (won’t say any more as I don’t want to spoil 😛 ) and the ending was sweet. I liked that we had two stories running along each other, one the soup shop and the other breaking the seals. I know there are many bad reviews on this as they found the dubbing a struggle. I do agree on the count of Raindrop as she sounded far too grown up for me to bear. And they never answer what happened to Bloom (when you watch you will see what I mean 😛 )? However, as I continued and watched the story (rather than focus on the voicing) I found I enjoyed it but this maybe a marmite thing 😛 . Plus who knows, the original (in Chinese) may have been better 😛 . I say give this film a try if you like animation with a decent story concept, but I have to admit it is not the best in the world. Enjoy 🙂
I give this film 2.5 Stars out of 5!
