Mr. Peabody & Sherman

Mr. Peabody & Sherman (2014)

Genre: Animation, Adventure, Comedy

I had not seen the retro cartoon series about Mr. Peabody & Sherman so I am unsure whether this has stayed loyal to the original or has offended original fans. However, for me I found this a very entertaining movie that had me captivated from beginning to the end 🙂 . The characters they introduced were all likeable; Mr. Peabody (Ty Burrell), Sherman (Max Charles) and Penny (Ariel Winter). The animation was also very good 😀 . I really enjoyed the storyline as it was well thought-out with plenty of humour as well as some issues suitable for children. The comedy made me laugh but I did appreciate the rift between the characters. We saw how Sherman struggled at school at the beginning and how he clashes with his dad as the movie continues (you will see when you watch it 😛 ). I liked the characters we met through history as it made playful jokes but was smart with storyline to not be too ridiculous 😛 . This is a rather unique story that can be seen as predicable but I don’t think so. It is aimed for the family and I think both children and adults can be entertained by this movie from Dreamworks 🙂 . I also found Odysseus’ reaction to a certain character at the end was very funny (won’t say which character as that would spoil 😛 ). Overall, this is a great movie that I would happily watch again and would recommend 😀 . Enjoy 🙂

I give this film 4 Stars out of 5!

Geostorm

Geostorm (2017)

Genre: Action, Sci-fi, Thriller

I was looking forward to a decent disaster movie as I haven’t seen any that have matched up to expectations for a while. This is not the best one you will ever see but it does a decent job 🙂 . The CGI was plenty and decent quality. They were very dramatic to keep you entertained and I don’t think this affected the movie at all. My favourite disaster was the ice blast in Brazil as it definitely kept you gripped to the movie though I did like the fire in Hong Kong too 😀 . The main characters were alright, I can’t say I was attached to any of the characters and don’t know if I was bothered if they made it. However, to be fair I can’t say I did not like them either and they worked enough for you to enjoy the movie as a whole. I liked the reason for creating Dutch-Boy and the reason why this Geostorm was happening 🙂 . The pace of the movie ran well and it does enough to keep you entertained throughout 🙂 . Each disaster that happened got more dramatic and you did feel for the characters involved (mostly those characters weren’t main characters 😛 ). The bad guy(s) tried to be different and clever which I appreciate but the cheesy attempt to create emotion near the conclusion was too much. I felt more for Max’s friend (when you watch it, you will know 😛 ) then the people in space in the end. The movie ended rather too happily but I still enjoyed the overall movie. This is a decent disaster movie that is great for anyone who likes these types of film with a good story 🙂 . Enjoy 😀

The Guardian Brothers

The Guardian Brothers (2016)

Genre: Animation, Family Film

I was unsure what to expect from this animation that had originally been created and shown in China first. You do notice at times, especially Raindrop (Bella Thorne), her animation does not match up with her now English voice over which I tried to not to judge on (but it did become a tad irritable 😛 ). Also, I found the animated dogs a little distracting as they acted too “cartoony” compared to the world of the film. Apart from that, I liked this movie 🙂 . I really liked the animation on everything else and the world of the Spirits 😀 ! It was very colourful, each character was different, the rules made clear to me and I really liked their designs 🙂 . Bloom (Cristina Pucelli) was a very pretty design while Shen Tu (Dan Fogler) and Yu Lei (Edward Norton) had gold versions. The narrative itself is easy to follow but got more captivating as the film continued. I liked the set up as it explained the situation and made me understand why certain characters did as they did. The climatic threat was good, the daemon I liked (won’t say any more as I don’t want to spoil 😛 ) and the ending was sweet. I liked that we had two stories running along each other, one the soup shop and the other breaking the seals. I know there are many bad reviews on this as they found the dubbing a struggle. I do agree on the count of Raindrop as she sounded far too grown up for me to bear. And they never answer what happened to Bloom (when you watch you will see what I mean 😛 )? However, as I continued and watched the story (rather than focus on the voicing) I found I enjoyed it but this maybe a marmite thing 😛 . Plus who knows, the original (in Chinese) may have been better 😛 . I say give this film a try if you like animation with a decent story concept, but I have to admit it is not the best in the world. Enjoy 🙂

Goodbye Christopher Robin

Goodbye Christopher Robin (2017)

Genre: Biography, Family Film, History

I was excited to see this biography film about the life of the author A.A.Milne who created Winnie the Pooh 🙂 . I had expected this to be similar to “Saving Mr. Banks” which was an endearing film and was also about the author of a famous literary character. However, I tried not to judge this film on that and enjoyed this tale throughout 🙂 . The scenery and costumes were great and I did feel captivated by their world 😀 . The acting was superb and I believed every single character especially Christopher Robin (Will Tilston) who was fabulous 😀 . The story throws to you straight into the worse part of this story at the beginning which leaves you on an edge of sorrow as you watch the rest (until the film catches back up with itself in the timeline). I loved the scene in the forest with Alan (Domhnall Gleeson) and Christopher Robin as his imagination with the snow was great 🙂 . I even liked the post traumatic stress disorder Milne was suffering appear in the movie as it helped us understand his character more. Daphne (Margot Robbie) was hard to understand and she became my least favourite character. The film did not shy away from the hard issues Christopher endured and the narrative was very enlightening. I never knew that he had to go through this and found the film had more of a depressive feel than heart-warming. Though, during the World War 2 section I completely felt for Milne and it was a rather sad scene (when you watch you will know 😛 ). This is an overall, great movie that is worth the watch but this maybe more suited to adults than for the whole family 🙂 . Enjoy 😀

Strange Magic

Strange Magic (2015)

Genre: Animation, Adventure, Comedy, Family Film

I am a fan of animated films about romance and fantasy plus at times I don’t mind cheesy films 😛 . This started really good and had me quite captivated with its introduction. I liked the idea of the two sides (one good and one bad) and the animation was great 🙂 . The CGI was fabulous and the look of the creatures was fantastic 😀 . My favourite creature was the Imp who was adorable and his reason for being in this film was worth it. I also loved the image of the fairies and their colours and I did appreciate the Bog King (Alan Cumming) not being pretty 😛 . The story is very predictable from the beginning the story starts but I was willing to forgive this. However, by the time the story hit half way (about the time Marianne (Evan Rachel Wood) went to find her sister on her own) the story got gradually worse. The cheesiness became unbearable as it continued (and I was trying to stomach as much as I could) with no surprises in this narrative. The romance was fine but I preferred Dawn’s (Meredith Anne Bull) and Sunny’s (Elijah Kelly) rather than the possibility of the main characters’. I found their “romance” ridiculously too quick (it was barely a few hours maybe less) for True Love 😛 . The songs are good and catchy (plus modern) but I found this film was over reliant on them. However, I did enjoy the scene when Dawn (when infected by the potions) sets her eyes on the first thing she sees 😛 . This is an animation I enjoyed in the beginning and despised at the end. I would not recommend this. Enjoy 😛

I give this film 1.5 Stars out of 5!

Flatliners

Flatliners (2017)

Genre: Drama, Horror, Sci-fi

I have not seen the original movie so I cannot compare how much better or worse this reboot movie is. However, when seeing the trailer I was very excited to see this and was happily entertained throughout 🙂 . There is an amazing good cast for this film such as Ellen Page (Courtney), Diego Luna (Ray), Nina Dobrev (Marlo) and James Norton (Jamie) who all acted good 🙂 . I believed the friendship and how the team got together, plus I really enjoyed the beginning as it set up the “drama” of the story well 🙂 . The scares in this film may not give you nightmares but will definitely make you jump and I certainly jumped a few times 😛 . The graphics of the “supernatural” world was great and I was on edge when the “horror” elements appeared. The worst scary scene but my favourite had to be the “Morgue” scene 😀 . I also really enjoyed the surprise in who would die first, as that was surprising and I never could have guessed 😛 .  However, I did enjoy the first half more and the ending could have finished better. Don’t get me wrong, it ended fine and I did not have a problem but it could have had a more dramatic climax. Also my least favourite character was Sophia (Kiersey Clemons) but I understood why she was there (kind of 😛 ).  Though, I really did enjoy it and liked the attention to small details such as 9 years ago Courtney holds a flip phone but a smart phone in the present day 🙂 . I think (seeing other people’s reaction to this movie) that you aren’t going to love this movie if you’re a fan of the original. However, if you looking for a rather entertaining movie that is not too scary to watch but jumpy, then this is for you 🙂 .Enjoy 😀

Be Afraid

Be Afraid (2017)

Genre: Horror, Sci-Fi, Thriller

This is another horror and supernatural creature movie which terrorises a family who have just moved to a small town in Pennsylvania. The story itself is alright and can keep you fairly entertained throughout 🙂 .  The opening scene was very good and was my favourite part 😀 . It through us straight into the drama and has us interested to find out what was threatening the family? I liked the character and look of Nathan (Michael Leone) and his scenes with the monster 🙂 . I also loved the scene with Heather (Jaimi Paige) in the bath tub as I thought at this point, we would see more of the monsters and that the story would get more gripping. The overall acting from everyone was okay and CGI was good too 🙂 . However, the story was not the most captivating I have ever seen and was almost at the point of boredom 😛 . I did not really care about the family and the movie left too many unanswered questions. Such as why are the creatures taking people or why (won’t spoil who 😛 ) did they keep the monsters hidden from everyone else? Plus the ending was ridiculous . I mean it was confusing because at one moment we have Dr. John Chambers (Brian Krause) looking for the child then we are given an ending. The film just quickly gave us a kind of solution without an explanation. This movie had potential at the beginning but wasted it on a rubbish storyline and a terrible ending. This was not even scary 😛 . This is a film I would not recommend as it has a forgettable story and no scares. Though, it may be for you if you like not scary horrors. Enjoy 😛

Rogue

Rogue (2007)

Genre: Action, Adventure, Horror

This movie is about a group of tourists who get trapped on a small mud island right in the territory of a “rogue” crocodile. This movie does sound like one of those B-Movies that you love to sit and laugh at its impossible storylines, plot holes and terrible CGI 😛 . However, this film is definitely not one of them. I was happily surprised by its plausible narrative and it was very interesting and captivating throughout 🙂 . I loved the beginning of this movie and the newspaper clips about “monster crocodile attacks” giving us a hint of what is to come for the rest of the movie 🙂 . I liked that in the first 30 minutes of this movie, we were allowed to get to know each individual character and I did not know who would be next (or first) to be “killed” 😛 . The suspense was great and there were some surprising deaths plus dramatic tension such as the “climb across the line” scene.  I was hooked as they tried to figure a way to survive and the way they defeat it was plausible which I appreciated 🙂 . The graphics were good and I liked how the crocodile looked realistic (as much as it could be as it was a rogue crocodile 😛 ).  The scenery was also very good and I absolutely loved the end credit music of “Never Smile at a Crocodile” 😛 . I wish though, I was more interested in the main character Pete McKell (Michael Vartan) because as much as I did not hate him…I did not really like him either. Though his character is not terrible and does not affect the overall enjoyment of this movie 🙂 .  Overall, this film is surprisingly enjoyable and great for anyone who loves monster horror flicks 😀 . Enjoy 😀

How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days

How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003)

Genre: Comedy, Romance

This is a decent light hearted romantic comedy that is great to watch over and over again 🙂 . This has a sweet and easy to follow narrative that can keep you very entertained even if the ending may be predictable 😛 . I loved the introduction to both main characters and the set up for the two characters to meet (their reasons and idea of the whole film) was very good. Kate Hudson as Andie Anderson and Matthew McConaughey as Ben Barry were both very likable characters 🙂 . I even loved their relationship throughout this and they were quite believable when they were no longer playing (the bet wasn’t the reason the characters met).  There are plenty of humorous moments in this which will have you laughing which mostly came from Kate Hudson’s ridiculous “clingy over the top” girlfriend scenes 😀 . Personally, I loved the set and flow of the first half of the movie more. I thought it was captivating, allowed me to see the world the characters were in, their intentions, their friends and plenty of romance and comedy to boot 🙂 . However, when the climax happens (when the bet is revealed) the ending can’t match the first half. Don’t get me wrong, the scene is funny and it ties up the story well. I guess I wanted a more wow ending or perhaps it ended too quickly by the time we got to the climax. Overall, this is a great movie that is fabulous for anyone who loves a decent romantic comedy or girly chick flick 😀 . Enjoy 🙂
