The Babadook

The Babadook (2014)

Genre: Drama, Horror

This is an unusual but very entertaining film that is certainly for those who prefer a horror movie focused on story than gore 🙂 . The movie starts off oddly but it is intriguing and it continues to remind us of the opening scene and allude to the car crash as the film continues. I liked and disliked the mother Amelia (Essie Davis) and child Samuel (Noah Wiseman) in this movie as we discovered more of their personalities. However, what I did like about both characters was that even in their most unlikable moments they were still understandable. However, my possible dislike did vanish as I got more gripped in the tale especially when Amelia starts to believe. The idea of isolation was great and the aunt was awful in this, plus the scene at the birthday party was good 🙂 . I loved the entrance to the Babadook and the scenes of his appearances. His story was great, the idea of the book and the “Babadook, dook, dook” was awesome 😀 . There are plenty of creepy moments in this and surprises 🙂 . I very much enjoyed how the atmosphere of dread and uneasiness never left. The twist near the end was great and I was unsure with the outcome making this film not predicable. I also very enjoyed how they “defeated” the Babadook and overall ending of the movie 🙂 . It is a nice change to find a surprisingly pleasant and happier ending to a horror movie 😛 . This is slow steady paced film with plenty of creepy scary moments that is great for those who love horrors that make you pay attention 🙂 . I definitely recommend this movie though I did not find this scary 😛 . Enjoy 😀

I give this film 4 Stars out of 5!

Kingsman: The Golden Circle

Kingsman: The Golden Circle (2017)

Genre: Action, Adventure, Comedy

The sequel to the surprisingly very successful first Kingsman movie that I could not wait to see 😀 . I can say this film is very entertaining and does please those fans of the original movie 🙂 . It’s great to see the familiar characters Eggsy (Taron Egerton), Merlin (Mark Strong) and the return of Colin Firth as Harry Hart. I really enjoyed the introduction to the American Statesman and loved that their code names where drinks such as Tequila (Channing Tatum) 🙂 . The story itself was very entertaining with its twists and surprises along the way. This film has many shocks and is not afraid to kill of some characters (even when you thought they would be safe 😛 ). I liked that it did not forget what had happened in the first film like who his girlfriend is (though you do wonder why is he dating her? 😛 ) and explaining why certain things happen. The villain Poppy (Julianne Moore) is absolutely terrifying and I do not question her power (being a difficult one to defeat). Plus I loved seeing more spy objects, spy fights and action scenes such as the ski lift 😀 . However, this film is long and the magic of the first movie could not be recreated for this sequel. I am not sure what it was that made this film lack, but as this movie continued you do feel it. Maybe it was that we had too many new characters and being in a completely different agency taking away too much familiarity. Maybe the villains defeat was very unimpressive compared to Valentine’s (Samuel L .Jackson). Though, this film has Elton John who is incredible funny in “Wednesday Night” scene 😛 . This movie is fabulous and is great for any fan of the original who wants to see more of the Kingsman and I can’t wait to see if a third movie is on the way 😀 . It is worth the watch just doesn’t have the magic of the first. Enjoy 🙂

I give this film 4.5 Stars out of 5!

Victoria and Abdul

Victoria and Abdul (2017)

Genre: Biography, Drama, History

I was very excited to see this movie from the trailers as it appeared to be a charming story about the unusual friendship between Queen Victoria (Judi Dench) and a young Indian clerk (Ali Fazal). The main two actors were great as their characters as they were believable, their friendship chemistry good and Judi Dench looked fabulous as Queen Victoria 😀 . My favourite actor in this was Eddie Izzard as Bertie the Prince of Wales who was amazing 😀 . He was very convincing as his character throughout and I liked him even at his worst (as it fitted the character’s persona). This film was quite humorous at times and my favourite moments were from Mohammed’s (Adeel Akhtar) jokes about the English food as Barbaric 😛 . The narrative was informative (as I have not heard of this story in history before), scenery and costumes were great plus I was not bored 🙂 . I liked the speech Victoria gave when threatened with “insanity” and the Ali Fazal’s performance near the end was very good 🙂 . The actual end scene was sweet which matched the pleasantness of the movie (when it had time to be 😛 ). However, part way through the movie I lost my interest as it became a little depressive and I found the more I watch, the more I questioned Abdul Karim. Like why did he lie or not tell the entire truth? Though, this is minor but did not keep me from being captivated as it could have been. This is a decent watch and worth it for anyone wanting to learn more about Queen Victoria but I can’t say I would be rushing to see this movie again 😛 . Enjoy 😀

I give this film 3.5 Stars out of 5!

IT

IT (2017)

Genre: Adventure, Drama, Horror

This looked fabulous from the trailers and when I finally got to see it, the film certainly did not disappoint 😛 . The narrative is amazing and captivating from the beginning to the end. The beginning scene is very good for a horror film without being over the top with the “gore”. It had a perfect balance of scariness and an intriguing storyline plus after seeing the first clip it gives you a hint of how the rest of the movie will follow. Bill Skarsgård as the clown Pennywise was fantastic 😀 !! He looked creepy and terrifying while his outfit looked amazing 🙂 . The overall visual aesthetics of the film is quite memorable especially its use of the colours such as Georgie’s yellow coat and the red balloon 🙂 . Georgie (Jackson Robert Scott) was an adorable actor in this and the overall lead children were good. I liked them all but some I preferred more such as Eddie (Jack Dylan Grazer) and Beverly (Sophia Lillis) 🙂 .Their relationships (the entire group of friends) were sweet and this made us like them more. This movie had some great scary scenes such as Pennywise in the basement (in the water) and the projector plus the graphics in this film are fantastic 🙂 . What I loved in this film was the discovery the children found as the movie continued and I never knew who would be killed next 😛 . However, the only downside I would say was that this film did not terrify me. I think I was more afraid for the characters rather than the movie being scary. This film is certainly worth the watch and I cannot wait to see what Part 2 will bring 😀 . Enjoy 🙂

The Hitman’s Bodyguard

The Hitman’s Bodyguard (2017)

Genre: Action, Comedy

From the minute I first saw this trailer I was very excited to see this movie 😀 . Ryan Reynolds (Michael Bryce) and Samuel L Jackson (Darius Kincaid) did not disappoint and created a good partnership together. Their humour and lines in the dialogue were quite amusing and some parts hilarious 😀 . Other moments within the film tried to keep the level of comedy and action equal and it mostly does. The actual narrative was quite entertaining with a decent plot (try to defeat the bad guy and don’t let the witness die 😛 )plus the graphics are good. My favourite scene had to be the beginning as it was a great set up to understanding the character of Michael Bryce and the scene was a shocker 😛 . I also thought Gary Oldman’s character Vladislav Dukhovich was a very impressive villain and the action scenes were great 😀 . I liked the scene in the court near the end (can’t say what scene as I don’t want to spoil but I can hint it is the one with the van 😛 ) onwards was more intriguing. The defeat of the bad guy was very fitting and I liked the development of the characters as they “had” to get along 🙂 . However, as much as I was not bored at all, I can’t say I truly enjoyed this either. It storyline was very predictable which affected the action side of the storyline and the comedy suffered too. The jokes only had me slightly chuckling at times but no laughter. The majority of jokes weren’t funny and the only ones that got me chuckling were due to Reynolds and Jackson’s characters only. Plus the love interests and how they got together were not needed. However, this is still a very entertaining movie and I am glad to have watched it once, I just wished it had been funnier. Enjoy 😀

I give this film 3.5 Stars out of 5!

Far From the Madding Crowd

Far From the Madding Crowd (2015)

Genre: Drama, Romance

I was wary about watching this movie as I had seen another book adaptation of Thomas Hardy (Tess of the D’Urbervilles BBC series) and I was not the biggest fan. Not that the series was bad because it wasn’t, it was just very depressive and I assumed this one would be the same. However, I was definitely wrong and absolutely loved this 😀 ! The story had me hooked from the very beginning and it continued to captivate me throughout. There are no big dramatic action scenes but the small scale drama still manages to grip you to the story of Bathsheba Everdene. Carey Mulligan performs Bathsheba brilliantly and I loved the empowerment and kind of feminist feel 🙂 . I believed her and really wanted her to “astonish them all” 😛 . The romances she finds and her admirers were also good 🙂 . I liked that each were very different a sheep famer Gabriel Oak (Matthias Schoenaerts), land owner William Boldwood (Michael Sheen) and soldier Sergeant Francis (Tom Sturridge) plus each had a moment with her that made you want her to go with them. I could not decide who I wanted her to be with 😛 . I liked the scenes that shocked me such as the scene with the sheep on the cliff and the conclusion of Christmas Eve party 😛 . The scenery was amazing, the acting superb and costumes really helped envision the Victorian world the characters lived in. 🙂  I liked the character development and the fallout over the Fanny Robbin situation. The ending is also very fitting and perfect 😀 . I was left wanting to see more of this film 😀 ! Overall, this is a great romance period drama which is a must watch for anyone who loves those genres and is a fan of Thomas Hardy 🙂 . Enjoy 😀

The Green Mile

The Green Mile (1999)

Genre: Crime, Drama, Fantasy

This is a film that everyone needs to watch at least once in their lifetime and it is a classic 😀 . Its storyline is compelling, gripping and entertaining from start to finish plus mixes realism with magic perfectly 🙂 . The story is dark (it is following the lives of death row guards) and does have some uncomfortable moments but it feels right for the atmosphere of the movie. I loved that the excellent performances from all the actors lead by Tom Hanks (Paul Edgecomb) and Michael Clarke Duncan (John Coffey) helped created so many different characters. I believed each character (some made me love them and some made me hate them 😛 ) and each felt useful to the narrative. I loved the character of Eduard Delacroix (Michael Jeter) who was lovable and funny even if he was a death row inmate plus his exit scene is a shocker. The filming is clean and crisp plus the CGI on the “magic” still works for this movie 🙂 . John Coffey was an extremely likable and unique character and Paul Edgecomb (performed fabulously by Tom Hanks) was a main character you wanted to follow 🙂 . Percy Wetmore was a perfectly horrid character who I believed (and hated 😛 ) and Doug Hutchison performed him brilliantly. The movie also ends great as it leaves you questioning the experience Edgecomb saw while accepting a perfect end to a memorising movie. It is beautifully filmed, has a fantastic storyline with solid acting 😀 . This is a long movie (over 3 hours) but you really don’t notice 😛 . I definitely recommend this movie if you like Stephen King book adaptations (as this is one) or Crime with a touch of Fantasy 🙂 . Enjoy 😀

I give this film 5 Stars out of 5!

Mrs. Brown’s Boys D’Movie

Mrs. Brown’s Boys D’Movie (2014)

Genre: Comedy

This movie is certainly made for the fans alone and as much as I tried I could not get into it. Don’t get me wrong, this film is fine enough to watch throughout and it certainly is not the worst movie in the world. However, for a comedy it felt like it missed the mark 😛 . I have watched a few episodes of the popular television show and can see it is funny 🙂 . It can make me laugh but this movie struggled a lot. The concept of the narrative is passable but not very exciting and the “corpsing” in the movie wasn’t very good for the flow of the film. The stereotyping of the Chinese and Russians was very bad (especially the Chinese) and was rather cringe worthy to see. The opening scene was alright compared to the rest of the movie and the outtakes in the end credit were quite funny 😀 . The acting is not good, the jokes old and I really was not captivated. It feels like the format of this show does not work as a movie as it over stretches to the point of boredom. Where the story and humour that Brendan O’Carroll can create in 30 minute sitcom may work but cannot translate to the big screen. Mrs. Brown’s Boys is not my cup of tea and I have only seen the odd one when it was on TV. Now I may be actively avoiding this because the movie has certainly put me off 😛 . This one is for fans only if they can cope with its simple storyline but otherwise I would say not to watch this movie 😛 . Enjoy if you can 🙂

I give this film 1.5 Stars out of 5!

Blade

Blade (1998)

Genre: Action, Horror, Marvel

Another Marvel movie but this one is before the Marvel Cinematic Universe and it’s a horror 😛 . I had not seen Blade before but I really enjoyed this movie 🙂 . The storyline kept me highly entertained throughout and I was hooked from the beginning. The start of movie throws you straight into the story and the scene with the nightclub is a great scene 😀 . It is very interesting to watch as well as being a great introduction to Blade (Wesley Snipes) and the world he has to live in. Wesley Snipes performs Blade impressively as his character’s personality does not seem to falter and it is different from other Marvel Superheroes 🙂 . His lady interest (though more of a sidekick) Karen (N’Bushe Wright) is a welcome addition as she wants to fight rather than be saved and I actually believed her which is refreshing 😛 . The main villain Deacon Frost (Stephen Dorff) is a decent bad guy and his cool but cruel attitudes to others in his way makes him impressive. The fight scenes are well choreographed and fitted the story well (that it wasn’t placed there for no reason 😛 ). The graphics and how the vampires die was good and I liked the turn to skeleton death the most 🙂 . However, the graphic aren’t as good as they probably would have been but it doesn’t affect the movie. It ends well and you can’t wait to watch a sequel 😀 . This is a highly entertaining and generally fantastic movie for any Marvel fan or fans of Vampire horror films 😀 . Enjoy 🙂

I give this film 4.5 Stars out of 5!
