The Fog

The Fog (2005)

Genre: Horror

This horror is a remake of the original The Fog movie in 1980, and I can’t say how true it is as I have not seen it. However, as much as this film is passable to watch from beginning to end I don’t know if I can call this a horror. I mean sure, we have ghosts, deaths and plenty of things happening in the dark but I wasn’t scared. The thing I liked was learning about the past and the connections of who was being aimed at (by the ghost) and why 🙂 . The pace treaded along slowly and wasn’t the most entertaining. I did like the scene with the “boat party” though I do wish it had been done better. I was captivated when the child was being chased and when the “fog” was taking over the town 🙂 . There are a few plot holes and unanswered questions that should have been answered to make this more interesting. Such as, why does Nick need two love interests when I barely saw him in love with one of them? They never questioned Nick’s Uncle’s face (which was rotting) or the fact the ghosts “graffitied” a church. I though the ghosts were from 1800’s so why did they use spray cans?? The CGI is not very good but I did like the ghost ship in the night 🙂 . The characters are not very deep and are cliché of an early 2000’s horror (or any horror actually 😛 ). To be fair, I was entertained enough to watch to the end. Moments in this were promising, although the movie’s end could not save it. For as much I as I didn’t mind it, it was more of a ghost (and strange) romance movie than a horror which was quite predicable 😛 . This was a confusing plot that wasn’t very scary and I wished I had just watched the original. Enjoy 😀

I give this film 1.5 Stars out of 5!

The Dark Tower

The Dark Tower (2017)

Genre: Action, Adventure, Fantasy

I have never read the books by Stephen King so I don’t know how faithful to the original this is and if any fans will enjoy this movie. However, coming to this film with no prior knowledge, I really loved this movie 😀 . I was gripped from the start, captivated throughout and loved the ending 🙂 . My favourite person in this movie was Walter (Matthew McConaughey) 😀 . His performance was fabulous and his character was believable.  He was awesome, strong, his magic great and was terrifyingly evil 😀 . Idris Elba played a very cool Gunslinger Roland who created an interesting character to follow. I also liked the main character of Jake (Tom Taylor) and his relationship with Roland 🙂 . The other world was great and I liked the threat element of the demons. The pace was very good and action scenes were steadily placed (it felt right and I was not left wanting). The magic and hints to a darker world (such as the scene when Jake is attacked by the house) was very good and kept me guessing. There are a few deaths in this that are shocking and a great twist in the tale (won’t say who as don’t want to spoil 😛 ). Plus in the final battle, I loved the cleverness of how the defeat was achieved. Overall, this was a great adventure fantasy for anyone who loves otherworldly movies 🙂 . I would recommend this movie, would happily watch again and would love to watch another film if a sequel is ever made 😀 . Enjoy 😀

I give this film 4.5 Stars out of 5!

Bridesmaid

Bridesmaids (2011)

Genre: Comedy, Romance

I had heard many people who loved this movie and recommend this comedy. Therefore, when I got the chance I had to give this movie a watch 😛 . The overall story is pleasant and I can’t say I wasn’t captivated from beginning to end. The actresses who played the main characters all performed great and I liked the fact this movie is lead by women 🙂 . However, the humour was not as great as I was expecting. The humour felt off or overdone and it tried to force us to laugh along at the comedy elements. Don’t get me wrong I did laugh at parts and it was not terrible 😛 . I think its main problem was the main character herself. Annie (although portrayed brilliantly by Kristen Wiig) was not a very likeable character. I get her life was awful and at times I did feel for her but the problems she faced became annoying. She became dislikeable as the story continued especially her attitude to people and that moment in the bridal shower was horrid. The only characters I did like in this movie were Megan (Melissa McCarthy), Helen (Rose Byrne) and Rhodes (Chris O’Dowd) 🙂 . I did like the growing relationship between Annie and Rhodes (except for her attitude part way through). However, it is saved by the ending and I can’t say it wasn’t entertaining. This is an alright movie that is possibly worth the watch but it is not as great as others may say 😛 . If you like crude humour with your romantic comedy then this is for you 🙂 . Enjoy 😀

I give this film 3 Stars out of 5!

Man Up

Man Up (2015)

Genre: Comedy, Drama, Romance

I am not the biggest fan of comedies but sometimes I do find a rare comedy that keeps me entertained throughout 🙂 . Man Up was pleasant, lovely, funny, captivating and a great watch from start to end. We are introduced to Nancy (Lake Bell) and even with her “problems” we automatically sympathise and really root for her to succeed when the film continues 🙂 . The main plot of this film “pretending to be someone else’s date” is actually quite unique and even though it’s “wrong” you really want it succeed 😀 . Jack (Simon Pegg) is a really great character and I really appreciated that this film gave him flaws too not just Nancy 😛 . The chemistry between the two characters is really genuine and I really liked them in the bar when the ex-wife turns up (won’t say any more as I don’t want to spoil 😛 ). There is plenty of space for comedy to work its way into the story and isn’t over powered by the romance. The “The Reflex dance off” was really funny and I loved the scene when Jack is running with the drunk teenagers 😀 . Nancy ‘s old school acquaintance Sean (Rory Kinnear) is the most marmite comedy element here but he is needed for the conclusion.  The pacing of the movie flows well and I was enjoying it that much that I wished I had more to watch. Though I loved the ending and I think it ended perfectly for any fan of romance comedies 🙂 . I certainly recommend this movie for anyone who likes romantic comedies or anyone in general as you will be surprised at how good this is 🙂 . Enjoy 😀

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017)

Genre: Action, Adventure, Fantasy, Sci-Fi

I had not heard much of this before the first trailers but I was excited to see a new sci-fi movie 🙂 . The story line is very entertaining and interesting throughout. The beginning was very captivating at the start and actually quite emotionally as well (when you see the scene you will know what I mean 😛 ). The graphics and the overall visual world was absolutely amazing 😀 . It the way the “City of a Thousand Planets” was created was very interesting to see and I loved how in each world I was immersed entirely. They flowed well and the “missions” in the film were action packed and exciting to watch 🙂 . The overall main storyline is a little predicable but I found it enjoyable enough to watch till the end. Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne were great as Valerian and Laureline. Their chemistry was a nice touch and very believable 🙂 . All the cast was very good but the main two characters were the best. Rihanna was pretty decent as her character Bubble and I did enjoy her change outfits routine 😀 . However, her character was not as compelling as she could have been to make me care for her as much as her scene (you will know which one 😛 ) wanted me too. The twist in the story is not a shocker but I did enjoy the ending 🙂 . This is a really good sci-fi that I would happily watch again and I enjoyed its pleasant tale. I think it needs a pleasant story to start us off with this new world and the films which I am sure are to follow 😀 . This is worth the watch for anyone who loves Sci-fi and wanting something new 🙂 . Enjoy 😀

I give this film 4.5 Stars out of 5!

Love & Friendship

Love & Friendship (2016)

Genre: Comedy, Drama, Romance

This is one of the newest versions of Jane Austen’s books which I had not seen before. Love & Friendship is based on the novella Lady Susan and being a fan of previous novels turned to movies, I couldn’t wait to watch this 🙂 . The costumes (especially Lady Susan’s dresses) were amazing, the scenery and houses were great and the background music was suitable. The beginning the story was quite appealing and captivating enough to keep you intrigued. I loved the “introductions” to the characters by giving each person a title and witty description 😀 . That made it unique and at times quite funny to read 😛 .  Kate Beckinsale plays Lady Susan Vernon wonderfully as I believed the character throughout. She was definitely the most entertaining and memorable of them all 🙂 . The comedy was mostly mild throughout but Sir James Martin (Tom Bennett) was absolutely hilarious 😀 . He was my favourite in this film and I especially loved his scene with the “peas” 😛 . Also the dialogue is very faithful to the period and book and at times this wasn’t always a good thing.  It got a little confusing to follow what actually was happening, who was tricking who and had Lady Susan succeeded? The ending was also very much of a let-down.  It felt rushed and shoved together to make a happy ending without actually achieving in movie time. I was unsure how I felt with who married who and that Lady Susan kind of got away with it. Also Frederica Vernon wasn’t the most interesting character to care about. I guess this is great for fans of Jane Austen only but I think reading the book would be better 😛 . However, it is acted great and the odd humour is worth it for Jane Austen fans 🙂 . Enjoy 😀

I give this film 3 Stars out of 5!

Just Like Heaven

Just Like Heaven (2005)

Genre: Comedy, Fantasy, Romance

This is a very sweet romantic movie that is perfect for those lazy days watching with friends 🙂 . This is a pleasant story to follow that is surprisingly very captivating from beginning to the end. There are a few emotional moments in this story that may not be as strong as others in this genre but it is enough. There are plenty of surprises and twists for this easy to follow storyline that help keep it entertaining 🙂 . For example, I loved it when we learnt more about what may have happened to Elizabeth and how she is connected to David. The romance between Elizabeth (Reese Witherspoon) and David (Mark Ruffalo) is sweet, charming and believable 🙂 . I loved their first meeting and how their animosity at the beginning was very comical. I especially loved the scene where Elizabeth is annoying David singing “Tomorrow” 🙂 . The addition of the psychic Darryl (Jon Heder) is fine and worked well with the story and Abby (Dina Spybey-Waters) was quite funny 🙂 . I enjoyed the beginning scene which gives us a hint of what Elizabeth’s life was like and does introduce the tone of the movie well.  I also loved the small addition of the magic /other worldly stuff such as the niece being more aware than normal (when you watch it you will know 😛 ) . The ending is great and kind of has a fairytale feel to the overall movie. This story is a tad predicable near the end but I liked it originality at the beginning and reason for these characters to meet 🙂 . Overall, this is a sweet, entertaining and fantastic movie that is great for anyone who loves romantic comedies with a touch of something different 😀 .  I would recommend this movie and would happily watch again 🙂 . Enjoy 😀

War for the Planet of the Apes

War for the Planet of the Apes (2017)

Genre: Action, Adventure, Drama

The 3rd film in the reboot franchise that started in 2011 and quite honestly I enjoyed this movie 🙂 . The graphics are really good, the story is much darker and I was quite captivated throughout 🙂 . There are many bad reviews I have seen about this and I can get where they are coming from. It is a tad predictable (but if you have seen any of the first movies from the 60’s then you should know how this should go 😛 ) and it’s not a typical war film. Well I think it has enough war elements for a Planet of the Apes movie but if you were expecting a proper one side vs. another than this is not that. It is messier with a real nasty side of war sliding in with desperate humans who aren’t all kind. I personally did not mind these issues 🙂 . I liked the references to the story to come (to the 60’s start) such as introducing a small child Nova (Amiah Miller) and I really liked the flashbacks of Koba (Toby Kebbell) when Caesar (Andy Serkis) was at his worst. I also loved the new addition of Bad Ape played by Steve Zahn who was lovely and really funny 😀 .  There are some shocking and sad moments in this such as the scene in the cave and you do truly feel so sorry for Caesar. My favourite scene was the escape from the “Human Zoo” (I won’t say what scene specifically as I don’t want to spoil 😛 ). I personally liked this movie more than the second one in the reboot and it felt fitting for the end movie. However, I would have preferred a different ending but that is just me I think not a reflection of the overall film. A great watch and needs to be seen to finish off the Planet of the Apes reboot movies 🙂 . Enjoy 😀

I give this film 4.5 Stars out of 5!
