The Book of Life

The Book of Life (2014)

Genre: Animation, Adventure, Comedy

The Book of Life is a pleasant and surprisingly unique story that the entire family can enjoy 🙂 ! The graphic are pretty good and I really liked the fact the animation changed to “puppetry style animation” for the “story”. It began well and ended quite happily 😀 . I have to admit I really enjoyed this story and was so happy that the predictably did not affect the narrative.  There was a moment during the beginning when I thought it would end a certain way because I knew who she would chose. However, half way through the tale, it shocked and surprised me which had me captivated until the end 😀 !! I liked the three main characters Manolo (Diego Luna), Maria (Zoe Saldana) and Joaquin (Channing Tatum) as they were likable throughout. I also loved the characters in the land of dead and especially the characters of Xibalba (Ron Perlman) and La Muerte (Kate del Castillo) 🙂 . The songs are really enjoyable to hear and are recognisable. The colours in this film are really great as well 🙂 .  I really enjoyed learning about the Mexican Culture of the Dead without it feeling like I was getting a lecture. It was enough and let storyline keep you entertained and captivated. A great animation which was better than I expected 🙂 . I definitely recommend this film to all ages 🙂 . Enjoy 😀

I give this film 4.5 Stars out of 5!

The Great Wall

The Great Wall (2017)

Genre: Action, Adventure, Fantasy

This is a decent movie that I really enjoyed 😀 . The storyline was great, kept me entertained the entire way through and was captivating 🙂 . I loved the graphics for the fight scenes, the monsters were simple to grasp but impressive and I believed them enough for the story. I even felt for the characters that had to go against them and felt for them as they tried to “defeat” the monsters. The design was great in this movie with the different colours for each part of the army 🙂 . The characters were great in this film and I felt like I got to know each one and their reason for being here. The majority of the cast is Asian (like Tian Jing) which is expected and great to see as this film is set in China 😛 . Plus the reasons the “Westerners” (like the lead actor Matt Damon) are fighting for China (and here to save the day) was plausible for the narrative to continue. However, as much as I liked the fight scenes, the suspense, the edge of your seat actions, drama and shock (and sad) deaths the graphics aren’t that great. The beginning sequence of the movie had shocking low quality and had me worried that the quality would let the movie down. The good news is that you forget the quality and it does seem to get better as the movie continues 🙂 . So I suggest you try and ignore the first clip and appreciate the film 😛 . A great film for anyone looking for looking for a decent Action and Fantasy movie! Enjoy 😀

I give this film 4.5 Stars out of 5!

1700 years to build. 5500 miles long. What were they trying to keep out?

Monte Carlo

Monte Carlo (2011)

Genre: Adventure, Comedy, Family Film, Romance

Monte Carlo is one of those teen romance movies that you might watch with your friends when you are in the mood for a light hearted chick flick. The story is very simple to follow, there are not any big surprises waiting in the narrative and it ends as expected 😛 . Though, it does have a very warming and happy feeling throughout that keeps you entertained. It ends pleasantly and fitting enough for the film 🙂 . The main actresses (Selena Gomez, Katie Cassidy and Leighton Meester) act okay enough for the roles of the narrative but I can’t say the film shows the best acting I have ever seen.  Though, don’t get me wrong, I don’t think they are to blame as I think it has something to do with the average and typical narrative plus the film in general. The scenery is great and the whole fairytale aspect is good 🙂 . At times it did make me smile and I was most intrigued during the “almost found out” section near the “climax” of the movie. I also loved the growing romances though some could have been focused on more but at the ending one couple finished wonderfully 🙂 . I also wished they had made the distinction between Grace and Cordelia Winthrop Scott clearer, so the humour of Grace trying to imitate could have been funnier. Overall, an alright movie that I surprisingly liked but can’t deny this isn’t the greatest in romantic comedy genre movies. Good for a girly night in or for younger teens 🙂 . Enjoy 😀

She’s having the time of someone else’s life.

The Lego Batman Movie

The Lego Batman Movie (2017)

Genre: Animation, Action, Adventure

A movie that has spun from the success of The Lego Movie (2014) and of course, Batman 😀 ! This is a good solid movie that is highly entertaining with the colours, action and Lego characters for the children. This movie is also great for those who love Batman and for the adults in general, with its humour that we older generations will appreciate 😛 . The narrative itself is easy to follow and is quite captivating when the “bad guys” arrive. The action is plentiful but done in that Lego way 😛 . The opening credits are great and I loved Batman’s narration. His quotes in this movie are fantastic 😀 ! I loved the Joker in this and the references to the “shipping” between Batman and The Joker 😛 . I liked that I felt for Batman but I also felt for the bad guys as the narration allowed you to see each side and was surprisingly touching. However, as much as it looked good, was entertaining and hit everything for families and children…it just not as good. I wasn’t laughing out loud the entire way through and it felt a bit like a funny nostalgic trip down the Batman Franchises. Maybe you have to be a major Batman fan to appreciate all the in-jokes? Also, there was a moment for me where I was not as captivated as I probably should have been. Though there are more good points to this movie then bad and after all, it is aimed for children so in a sense, it did great 🙂 . It is also a definite watch for fans of Batman but I don’t think this has surpassed the success of the Lego Movie. Enjoy 🙂

I give this film 4 Stars out of 5!

Always be yourself. Unless you can be Batman.

Fifty Shades Darker

Fifty Shades Darker (2017)

Genre: Drama, Romance

The sequel to the infamous Fifty Shades of Grey that I am sure plenty of women (and their partners) are filling the cinema to see 😛 . The narrative is entertaining enough and the story did not suffer too much to the amount of sex in this movie. Let’s get to big issue of this movie. The sex is not too bad. There is plenty enough in there for those who want it but I did feel like there was less compared to the first movie. But the content was enough for those who want to see this movie just for that 😛 . The story and it’s “darker” theme isn’t really that much darker. The way the movie ended suggested that the last movie will be more darker compared to the title of the second 😛 . There are moments that were darker than the first movie which I did like 🙂 . Such as Ana’s “Stalker” and “the helicopter scene” were quite good and the one with the stalker did make me jump. However, these ended too quickly and could have been dragged out longer. Even the moment with Ana’s boss could have been much darker. I also liked the scene where Christian broke down his barrier for Ana (won’t say no more as I don’t want to spoil 😛 ). I haven’t read the book so I don’t know how close or true it stayed to the original but this film is alright. It’s entertaining enough and it does make you want to see the last movie. It’s a perfect film for those who loved the first 🙂 . Enjoy 😀

Every fairy tale has a dark side.

Hacksaw Ridge

Hacksaw Ridge (2017)

Genre: Drama, History, War

Hacksaw Ridge is a about a WWII American Army Medic that did the extraordinary. The story and how the director Mel Gibson, decided to shoot this movie is done quite fantastically 🙂 . It is compelling, entertaining, action packed and heart wrenching from start to finish 😀 . The beginning is slower than people might expect from a war movie but I enjoyed it and thought it was needed 🙂 . It helps us understand Desmond Doss (Andrew Garfield) and makes you hooked before the battle. The minute the “war” begins the action starts quickly. It is very intense and constant. It was an edge of your seat experience and the shocks were plentiful 🙂 . I was gutted when some characters died and the “gore” content was good. It was an acceptable amount. It showed what it was like without being too much for an audience to watch. I loved the lines “Please Lord, Help Me Get One More” and the awesome acting of Andrew Garfield 😀 . He performed Desmond wonderfully and you felt for him through his struggle before the war. The group of soldiers he was with were also good and I was laughing with them at the “introduction” near the beginning 🙂 . The angry moments that you may get for our main character is pushed aside by the time the movie ends. This will leave you awestruck and it has become one of my favourite war movies of all time 😀 . This movie you have to watch so therefore, I definitely recommend! Enjoy 😀 !

Please Lord, Help Me Get One More.

The Monuments Men

The Monuments Men (2014)

Genre: Drama, War

This movie is based off the real life events of a group of men who hunted for the stolen art from the Nazi’s. The real story itself is sweet, what they went through and what they fought for was worth it and it has a fantastic cast 🙂 . You cannot deny their acting skills with a stellar cast such as George Clooney, Matt Damon, Bill Murray, Hugh Bonneville and Cate Blanchett. So therefore, this should have been a fantastic movie 🙂 . However, all I can say is it’s alright. That’s it, just alright. The story (the film’s narrative not the real life one) was watchable but too pleasant and slightly boring. I could have been doing other things and not have missed much at all 😛 . However, there are some gems in this. When the Nazis burned the art it was horrifying and the hint to what was happening to the Jews was a grim reminder of the war horrors. Also I appreciated the scene between Richard Campbell (Bill Murray), Preston Savitz (Bob Balaben) and the German soldier. I also found the death scenes of the “main” characters the best moments in this. The first was done great with the narration and the second was more impressive as I was unprepared for that one (I can’t say much more as I don’t want to spoil 😛 ).  However, these scenes were too short compared to others which were quite boring and I really did not care about the other characters’ problems. Though I was quite captivated after the first death and really wanted them to get that art back 😛 ! The ending was cheesy and not needed. An alright war movie that disappointed more than I can say. Enjoy 🙂

I give this film 2.5 Stars out of 5!

It was the greatest art heist in history.

Sing (2017)

Genre: Animation, Comedy, Drama

This is a very good animation that both children and adults will enjoy 😀 . The story is simple to follow and may not be the most exciting, compared to other animations out there, but I found this highly enjoyable. It hit all the right points for me 🙂 . I was laughing, felt for the characters when the bad things happened and was kept entertained throughout. I loved the beginning and how each character was introduced without feeling like they were shoved at you 😛 . The build up was good, there never seemed to a clear winner and that all different types of singers were shown.  I can’t say there was a weaker character as all were different and great. I loved Johnny’s (voiced by Taron Egerton) and Rosita’s (Voiced Reese Witherspoon) stories the best 🙂 . There is also a stellar cast in this such as Scarlett Johansson, Matthew McConaughey, Seth MacFarlane, John C. Reilly and many more! Their songs were fantastic and those actors’ voices were exceptional 😀 !! My favourites were “I’m Still Standing”, “My Way” and “Don’t You Worry ‘Bout a Thing”.  I seriously loved this film and loved how it ended. This hits everything it was suppose to, kept me entertained and laughing with the characters. A great movie for the entire family 🙂 . Enjoy 😀
