A Monster Calls

A Monster Calls (2016)

Genre: Drama, Fantasy

This is a unique fantasy movie about a boy struggling with his mum’s illness who meets a tree monster. I don’t know if I would call this film a family friendly movie but children can watch this film without being bored. I really enjoyed this movie, was captivated throughout and the story was different 🙂 . I loved the watercolour animation effect during the Monster’s stories as it was intriguing and flowed into the normal narrative well. The film has plenty of tender moments in this movie that might bring a tear to your eye 😛 . Those mostly responsibly for causing tears were Felicity Jones (Mum) and Lewis MacDougall (Conor). Felicity Jones played a caring but ill mother and Lewis MacDougall’s performance was stellar as he portrays Conor’s emotions as it tries to cope with his situation. His silent struggle against bullies was profoundly effective and you root for him when he makes himself “noticed” 😀 . Also the relationships between Conor and his Mum, and between Conor and his Monster (Liam Neeson) are effective in this film 🙂 . The twist in “who called the monster” was nice and I like the hint / theory of who the Monster actually is (I won’t say my theory as I don’t want to spoil 😛 ). The human problems mixed well with the fantasy and this is a stunning story which makes this film a definitely must watch 😛 . Enjoy 😀

I give this film 5 Stars out of 5!
