This film had promise and the initial set up / basic story idea was alright. Unfortunately, this film is not one of the best this year. I really liked the beginning as it was shocking, nice acting and created a nice beginning set up 🙂 . The acting remained good the entire way through and Jake Gyllenhaal was the best in his portrayal of the main character, Davis. But after the initial letter was sent to the vending machine company the purpose of the story lost its way. Odd elements of humour (though not strong at all) appeared, good moments of acting and I did really liked the constant reminders of his wife throughout. Though I was extremely bored and the film is way too long 😛 ! I did not like the character of Karen (Naomi Watts). Though I did like the idea of someone trying to help him, the story did not need her to bring in her problems. The ending I liked when Davis began to feel again as his acting was good and ended the tale well. This film is arty and is trying to break the mould by being so “real” and “deep” but it doesn’t work. It may be great for those who like the odd ball films / are extreme fans of this type but I wished the initial narrative about him talking and sending letters to the company had stayed throughout. Enjoy 😀
I give this film 1.5 Star out of 5!
