Matilda (1996)

Genre: Comedy, Family Film, Fantasy

This is a wonderful film that the entire family can enjoy and is one of my childhood favourites πŸ™‚ . The story is perfect as it is entertaining and captivating, light and has some serious tones too. The dialog is brilliant and witty plus the humour in this film is very strong (still funny even nowadays). My favourite moment is the dance/powers scene (trying not to spoil πŸ˜› ) as it is unique to this film and very memorable. Β I also loved the tale of Miss Honey (Embeth Davidtz) and Matilda’s attempt to fix it. The cast is also great in this movie, Mara Wilson (Matida), Danny DeVito (Mr. Wormwood) and Pam Ferris (Trunchbull) πŸ™‚ . The overall feel to the film is very nostalgic and a typical 90’s movie but it still works and can become a family classic. Personally, I wished the ending had gone slight better were Matilda could keep her gifts (won’t spoil) but it still works πŸ™‚ . This is a great book adaption and a definitely recommend this film πŸ™‚ Enjoy πŸ˜€

I give this film 5 Stars out of 5!

Alice Through the Looking Glass

Alice Through the Looking Glass (2016)

Genre: Adventure, Family Film, Fantasy, Disney

The long awaited sequel to the Alice in Wonderland 2010 film directed by Tim Burton πŸ™‚ . Even though this second film was only produced by Tim Burton and not directed, I think it does a pretty decent job. I loved it πŸ˜€ . The story was unique and I didn’t mind it not being like the book as it more followed on from the 2010 film version. The costume set was good, CGI was good and the cast was great. I loved the character of Time portrayed by Sacha Baron Cohen who is not what he seems from the trailers and adds a great dynamic to the story πŸ™‚ . I really enjoyed following Alice (Mia Wasikowska) travel through time and I did feel really bad for the Red Queen (only a little πŸ˜› ). Plus the real world story element matched up the Wonderland too. The opening is really good, the ending finishes nicely and the final battle / fight is really good πŸ™‚ . I also like references to the first film and each character got plenty of screen time. A truly great sequel that the entire family can enjoy and whether it is worse or better than the first film is a matter of opinion πŸ˜› . Enjoy πŸ˜€

I give this film 5 Stars out of 5!

You’ve been gone too long, Alice.

Penelope (2006)

Genre: Comedy, Fantasy, Romance

This is a charming and sweet movie which is perfect for those that like light hearted fairytales πŸ™‚ . This has a more modern twist on a fairytale but keeps up the appeal of one throughout.Β  There is a fairly decent cast in this movie and the main two, James McAvoy and Christina Ricci, play particularly good characters πŸ™‚ . I liked the design of the film and quite liked the costume set of Penelope. There are quite good moments in the narrative like the wedding and the interactions of Max and Penelope. My favourite scene is the opening with the narration as it sets up the film well and the overall idea of this story is interesting enough. However, as much as this film tries it can’t captivate the entire way through and parts become cheesy πŸ˜› . Β The cheesy element is enhanced by some of the side characters like the parents and Edward Vanderman over acting at parts. The first half of the film before the “public reveal” was the best section. Though the ending has a nice moral style to it and I did like the relationship of Penelope and Max. Overall this a pleasant film that the entire film can watch together πŸ™‚ Enjoy πŸ˜€ .

I give this film 3 Stars out of 5!

X-Men: Apocalypse

X-Men: Apocalypse (2016)

Genre: Action, Adventure, Fantasy, Marvel

I was so excited for this film and it does not disappoint πŸ˜€ . The narrative is compelling, interesting and I loved the villain Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac) ! He was amazingly powerful and the scene where everyone notices him (with the nukes and Stan Lee’s cameo πŸ˜› ) was one of the best moments πŸ˜€ . I actually liked the character of Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) and loved the new cast who reminded me more of the original comics. I quite liked the nostalgic yet new versions of the original stories as it feels like they are trying to make this film more “correct”. Peter Maximoff /Quicksilver (Evan Peters) was awesome and probably the best thing in this movie with his dialogue and his Sweet Dreams scene (won’t spoil πŸ˜› ). The beginning scene in Egypt was my favourite as it set the feel of the film off well. I loved the entire cast though I felt so sorry for Magneto who was performed great by Michael Fassbender. This is a great film that is long but worth it. Though the film is not as good as days of future past was πŸ˜› . Enjoy πŸ˜€

The Hateful Eight

The Hateful Eight (2015)

Genre: Crime, Drama, Mystery, Western

This is an alright film and I do like the fact that it’s Quentin Tarantino’s eighth film πŸ™‚ . The story has a Western feel to it but without the overacting, dramatic scenery and those “moments” you only see in the classic Westerns. This film follows more the new type of Western that is more gritty, foul mouthed and “deep” trying to make the audience think πŸ˜› . I fairly enjoyed this film and I can’t say I was bored (captivated enough to watch till the end) and the narrative was okay. What I loved about this film was that it was sectioned off into chapters πŸ˜€ . My favourite chapter had to be Chapter 5 as this was the best part of the narrative. It was when the “Who Dunnit?” feel to the story finally and truly connected giving the reason why everyone is there. I did like the set up before this chapter and interactions of the characters though I did feel like something was missing. I liked the background music and it had a good cast. The story is long winded and aside from Chapter 5 the rest are either too offensive for the easily offended or mediocre. The typical too much blood (worse injuries than should have) of Tarantino isn’t actually the worse he has ever done and doesn’t take away too much from the narrative (doesn’t stop the flow). An alright film that I might recommend but not the best in the world. Enjoy πŸ™‚

Demolition (2016)

Genre: Comedy, Drama

This film had promise and the initial set up / basic story idea was alright. Unfortunately, this film is not one of the best this year. I really liked the beginning as it was shocking, nice acting and created a nice beginning set up πŸ™‚ . The acting remained good the entire way through and Jake Gyllenhaal was the best in his portrayal of the main character, Davis. But after the initial letter was sent to the vending machine company the purpose of the story lost its way. Odd elements of humour (though not strong at all) appeared, good moments of acting and I did really liked the constant reminders of his wife throughout. Though I was extremely bored and the film is way too long πŸ˜› ! I did not like the character of Karen (Naomi Watts). Though I did like the idea of someone trying to help him, the story did not need her to bring in her problems. The ending I liked when Davis began to feel again as his acting was good and ended the tale well. This film is arty and is trying to break the mould by being so “real” and “deep” but it doesn’t work. It may be great for those who like the odd ball films / are extreme fans of this type but I wished the initial narrative about him talking and sending letters to the company had stayed throughout. Enjoy πŸ˜€

Thor 2: The Dark World

Thor 2: The Dark World (2013)

Genre: Action, Adventure, Fantasy, Marvel

This film is so much better than the first film and I know I gave the previous one full marks πŸ˜› . The storyline is more dramatic, enthralling, captivating and the acting has gotten better πŸ˜› . You see more depth in the characters like Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and Odin (Anthony Hopkins) that previously had not been shown. Plus other side characters got a fair share of screen time like Frigga (Rene Russo) and Darcy (Kat Dennings). There are plenty of great action scenes and Malekith (Christopher Eccleston) threat is more “threatening” to the world making it more interesting πŸ™‚ . There are some shocking deaths (won’t say who) that are surprising, work well for plot and create some tender moments. The humour is on point again in this film and my favourite section has to be the “Captain America / Loki” thing πŸ˜› . Plus the CGI, overall set design of the other worlds was pretty good and it is set in London πŸ™‚ . I loved the ending scene as it is a shocker and you cannot wait to watch the next instalment. An amazing movie that is definitely worth a watch πŸ˜€ Enjoy πŸ™‚

Thor (2011)

Genre: Marvel, Action, Adventure, Fantasy

This is a decent enough superhero movie that adds to the huge Marvel Universe. I truly liked this movie and was highly entertained πŸ™‚ . Β I know I have said before that some films feel like they throw you straight into the action but this one truly does. It throws you in, brings you back to the beginning then takes you back to the start before it continues. I liked this as it keep me very entertained, I liked how the situation built and the overall story was crafted well. Great cast in this film such as Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston and Anthony Hopkins πŸ˜€ . Β There are nice touches of humour in this film along with the dramatic battles and decent CGI πŸ˜› . My favourite funny moment has to be the “Xena, Jackie Chan and Robin Hood” quote πŸ˜› . The character of Jane Foster was a decent character type (than the typical superhero love interest), she was likable and the relationship was believable. Also my favourite part in this movie is Thor trying to get his Hammer back πŸ™‚ A great story for those who are a fan of Thor, a fan of the Marvel Universe and will need to see this film before Avengers Assemble πŸ™‚ Enjoy πŸ˜€

Puss in Boots

Puss in Boots (2011)

Genre: Animation, Action, Adventure, Children, Family Film

A spin off the Shrek’s Movies that tells the audience the back-story of one (possibly the most) popular character from the franchise! Puss in Boots πŸ˜€ . The film delivers fairly well and does keep you pretty entertained. The movie references in the narrative and jokes embedded in this film are good (and I am pretty happy they are still here as this is a typical addition to Shrek’s Movies πŸ˜€ ). The character of Puss (Antonio Banderas) is great and it is nice to see his beginning plus a great film if you simply love the character. The new main characters Kitty Softpaws (Salma Hayek) and Humpty Dumpty (Zach Galifianakis) assist in the story well (good additions πŸ™‚ ). As much as the tale is interesting and will keep you entertained enough but my favourite was the humour. Like the dance fight, the light chase and the random cat who says “ooh” constantly πŸ˜› . Some the humans (and the way they treat Puss) can be annoying but works for the tale and the “slightly predicable” twist works πŸ˜€ . A wonderful film for the entirely family but not the best that DreamWorks has made. Enjoy πŸ˜€
